Hello all, I'm new to here but have searched this topic but can't seem to find the info I need. I'm currently looking at getting S40 MY08 onwards.

I'm a little confused with the diesel engines to choose from, with all the D3 D4 and D5 variants. It’s more the 2.0ltr engines that I'm confused with and the power output of them. I've sussed that the D5 is the 2.4ltr 5Cyl engine with 180 HP. But the 2.0ltrs with the D2 D3 and D4s? What engine has what power and how many cylinders and how to tell them apart as everything I can find on Auto trader and such sites all seem to come up with 136HP?? Non are showing up as 150 or 177 HP engines? Am I right in these numbers and engines first of all or am I barking up the wrong tree??

Any help would be very grateful. Thanks.

D5 = 5 cyl 2.4 180bhp (discontinued?)
D4 = 5 cyl 2.0 177bhp
D3 = 5 cyl 2.0 150bhp
D2 = 4 cyl 1.6 115bhp - updated version of 1.6D

1.6D = 4 cyl 1.6 110bhp (dropped 2010)
2.0D = 4 cyl 2.0 136bhp (dropped 2010)

I know the 1.6D and 2.0D have been dropped early 2010 and I think the D5 might also have been too.

The D2, D3 and D4 engines were introduced in 2010 to replace the 1.6D and 2.0D. So if you are looking at a MY08 car you should not find any with D2, D3 and D4, only 1.6D and 2.0D. You may find a DrivE which is a variant of the 1.6D with start stop etc - can't remember when it was introduced. You may also find D5s but these were dropped a while back.

I think the new D2 engine is a Volvo unit wheras the old 1.6D is a Ford /Puegeot one.

Can anyone confirm this ?

I can confirm it's not. It's the same engine uprated by 5bhp.

All Volvo petrol and diesel 4-cyl engines are sourced from Ford, including the new T3/T4 that are re-badged Ford Ecoboost engines, and absolutely nothing wrong with that - they are top spec and latest tech.

I've seen it mentioned on here that the 5-cyl diesels are manufactured by Ford in Bridgend but to a Volvo design.

Thanks for the info, I've got my head around it all now and looking from 2009> now for a car. The only problem I'm having now is telling the D2 and D3/D4 apart. Is there any obvious way of telling them apart as all I can find look the same unless everything on sale at the moment all have the D2 engines in them?? I've looked on the net for pictures of the D2 D3 and D4 and cant find anything. Does anyone on here have a picture or can tell me how to tell them apart please from the D2 and D3/D4 (I know the D3/D4 are the same engine so either of them to see a picture off is fine just so that I can tell it apart from the D2 please)

Thanks for your help.

The D2 is a 4 cylinder ford/citroen etc unit , the D3 and D4 are both Volvo 5 Cylinder units which look like a D5 but of different power , they are identical mechanicaly .

The D2 isnt the same engine as the 1.6D the head is completely different with 2 valves per cylinder not 4 valve like the 1.6D .. The D2 also runs twice the boost pressure as the 1.6D ... ( 37 psi !)

Also You could say the Volvo D5 engines are assembled in the ford factory in bridgend , still the same design as always when they came from Volvo's plant ... ( not quite true as the New 205bhp D5 has extensive modifications to the block .)

A few questions still please:

1. did Volvo redesign the head in conjunction with Ford/Peugeot, and is the bottom end still as per the original 1.6D.

2. will this engine still be common across Ford /Peugeot range?

3. why the step back to 2 valves per cylinder?

sorry to be pedantic, just curious.

I havent seen the other manufacturers latest versions yet ,

The cylinder head on the D4162T engine has been modified compared to the cylinder head on the D4164T engine. Two valves per cylinder and one camshaft instead of four valves per cylinder and two camshafts.
This takes less engine power to drive and can produce more low rpm torque , the double boost pressure more than compensates for any "high" rpm power loss .

The intake manifold's interface with the rest of the air system has also been modified where the majority of the intake manifold has been integrated in the cylinder head itself instead of the rocker cover.

The top of the piston has a different design in order to reduce compression ratio

This D4162T enine is euro 5 compliant , whilst the D4164T was Euro 4 ..

The block and lower components are much the same but most of the ancillaries around the engine , EGR system , drive belts and pulleys , injectors etc are updated .

The 115bhp D2 engine is available in the new C-Max and in the next gen Focus out next month. Probably will appear in various PSA cars if not already there.

I thought the previous 1.6D 110 bhp was 16-valve, certainly the 90bhp version offered in Fords/PSA was 8-valve.

Everywhere I check is saying the 110BHP version is 16V DOHC and the 90BHP is SOHC 8V, in Mini, Focus and Volvo specs online.

Is this what a D3/D4 engine should look like please. Can someone confirm?

The D4 in my V50 looks just like that apart from mine having a front strut and the brake/clutch fluid filler being in a different location.

You can also tell the 5 cylinder engines by their note when driving.

Yeah that would be the obvious off beat of the 5 cylinder note but some are a fair distance away and want to be sure of what it is before I travel and find out its not the car I'm after.

Also am I right in thinking the cars with D2 engines have single exahust pipes out the back and D3/D4 have twin pipes either side of the rear bumper?

The D4 has twin pipes as you describe. I don't know about the D3 and D2.

I've had a look on volvo site and found that D3/D4 has twin pipes out back and D2 you cant see any pipes as they are under the rear bumper.

I know the 1.6D and 2.0D have been dropped early 2010 and I think the D5 might also have been too.
Just a quick note clarifying engine codes on the D2 variant:
D4162T = 1.6D 8v single overhead cam (Eco drivE) - This is what I have in my v50 btw.
D4164T = 1.6D 16v double overhead cam.
