Any idea how much an independent would charge for a cambelt change on a 2005 V50 2.0d engine please?

Nothing, it doesn't have one as far as I know unless that's only newer models.

They have a chain instead - like cars used to all those years ago. Guess that should be changed but I've no idea when.

But I'm sure someone on here will be able to help.

Mine needs doing in a little while ('07 V50)

I'm getting a mate of mine to do it but it's still going to cost about 150 ish including parts (and that's mates rates!)

Those are prices for a chain change and not a cambelt?

Does anyone know mileage/age a chain should be changed?

The V50 2.0 D engine doesnt require any belts changed until 150,000 miles or 10 years which ever comes first . And it DOES have a cambelt ...

Ive read a fewe times on here that the 20d does not require a timing belt change till 144.000 miles or 12 year which ever is sooner, then read somewhere else that vadis say must be done b4 10 years old, yet my service book for my 2005 s40 2.0D says services should be carried out every 12,000 miles then a list of additions , including :additionally at every 72.000 miles or 6 years, Timing & auxillary belt change ( s40/v50 diesel)
and every 96.000 miles or 8 years from the petrol model , so thats even more confusing

Checked my service manual this morning: 2.0D cambelt to be changed at 6 years or 75,000, whichever is sooner, then every 100,000 miles or 10 years after that.

My answer comes from official volvo service check lists and it has been 144000/150000 miles or 10 years ( not 11 ) for many years now .... contact any volvo dealer and you should be told the same , preferably contact volvo customer service ..

These handbooks saying 75000 miles may be old models , The eloys top up was destined to be every 75000 miles when the car was launched but it was soon changed to 36000 miles , in practice the tank runs out between 40000 and 50000 miles ..

My V50 2.0 D which has just completed 135,000 miles and I have had a independant and recommended mobile fitter change the belt, idlers and auxillary belt for £204 inc vat, the guy is a top ex Ford tech who has extensive Volvo experience, also genuine parts used

I took my '55 plate 2.0D into my local Volvo dealer for it's 87.5k service on Friday and whilst I was there I queried whether a cambelt change had been done on the 75K service (before I bought the car.)

They said that as far as their system was concerned, the 75k service had been done (by them) but they had no record of the belt itself being changed.

In the end the service guy called Volvo UK direct and quoted them the VIN. The "official" line that he got back is that the service book is wrong and the belt doesn't need changing until 144.5k or 12 years.

It seems there's a lot of confusion mainly due to what's in the service book, but it was also interesting the service guys couldn't give me a definite answer themselves.

I've sent an email to Volvo UK this morning just to double check!

I would imagine that as far as the service book is concerned, it needs to cater for many different languages and driving environments; so in the grand scheme of being things country variances arent noted as it would make it too confusing.
Also, a service book for the UK, France Italy or Nepal for example would be rather expensive to produce. The onus would then be on the specific country servicing departments to clarify it and put our minds at rest. Clearly work needs to be done here.

With a low mileage car is it reasonable to leave the top up to 40,000 rather than pay for it to be done at the age related service schedule (4 yrs?)

A Volvo main dealer service chap told me this week that I would do no harm by waiting until 42000 miles to have my late 2007 S40 1.6D topped up. He said if meanwhile it did run out, I'd get a warning message on screen and would not do permanent damage to the filter.

that is ok if you dont mind the car breaking down and going into limp home mode , then having to get to the garage and have it topped up and reset .. These kind of things usualy happen at the most inconvenient moments don't they!

I can agree with that but with a car that is likely to be at no more than 25,000 when the time schedule says top up there would seem to be a little leeway?

hhmmm emailed volvo UK regarding 2.0D (2009 C30) and: -

I am sorry to read that you have been receiving conflicting information regarding the Cambelt change requirement. I can confirm that the Cambelt on your vehicle is required to be changed every ten years. There is no limit on the mileage.

In short for most people at the moment nothing to worry about. I am on 116,000 and 6 years so have nothing to worry about. It will get done in a couple more years.

Thats a bit worrying , are they saying it has to be changed at ten years irrespective of mileage which could be 200000 or 300000 by then .. ???????

If so then they are wrong according to the current volvo service checklist ..!

"All models renew timing & inner/outer auxiliary drive belts along with new belt tensioners and idlers - check date/mileage decal
Every 10 years or 150.000 miles/240,000 km whichever occurs first"from the current updated service check sheet 97001457 "for S40/V50/C30/C70 4cyl diesel models 2007- 12 MY"
I would clarify it with them ..
It is nothing new it has always been 10 years or 150000 miles ( give or take the difference between 12000 miles and 12500 miles service intervals ) since 2004 ...
