Lower Wishbone bushes

Looks like I need to change the lower wishbone bushes on my 2002 V70. Can anyone give an indication of the cost for a garage to change both sides? Can this be done by any garage or should I look for a good independant Volvo garage?

at the end of the day theres "ANY" garage and "ANY" garage ,take it to a recommended independant,,,rather than volvo do a search im sure youll find the info yiu neeed

Any decent garage should be able to to the job.I did mine myself without any problems.I bought the control arms from pfv online,i think they were £78 each.I dont know what sort of cost a main dealer would charge,but i should think they would probably charge 3hrs + for labour.

Im in the process of doing the job with the purple poly bush jobbies. Its cheaper if you take the arms off get the parts and just get the garage to press the new bush in.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I think I will get the wishbones complete with the bushes and then I can fit them without needing any presses.

Have looked at the procedure on VADIS and it looks straight forward (famous last words!!!).

Will order the parts and wait for a nice weekend.

only cost me £93 for a pair of wishbones + 2 droplinks all the way from the usa

Be careful when you've undone the bottom ball joint NOT to extend the driveshaft as it comes out of the cv housing really easily, letting the ball bearings fall into the cv gaiter. It's not the end of the world if it does,but its a messy and fiddly job to get back together.

I'm new to the forum and was wondering if anyone had put together a guide on how to change the front bushes on the V70? Are there any special tools involved either?
What is the best thing to do - get new bushes or get complete wishbones? If the latter does anyone know where to get them from as the main dealers chanrge a small fortune (Just had oil service to keep up history and they told me the bushes had perished...).
The car is a V70 Sept '03 D5 SE model.

Where did you order them from? With such a good exchange rate at the moment its certainly worth considering getting them from the states. (I too am looking to get some new lower arms).

My bushes are also worn on my 52 plate V70 D5 (117,000 miles) and told they will be a MOT failure.

Quoted £175 per side fitted (inc VAT) for complete wishbone (genuine Volvo parts) by local independent Volvo specialist.

Sound about right?

The front bush is very tricky to change without the correct Volvo special tool .
If both bushes need changing then it is more economic to change the arm , if just the front bush is worn it is JUST cheaper to have a new bush fitted ,

They should charge about 1.3 hours for the job per side to fit new front wishbone bushes , the new ones are better quality , dont forget new wishbone bolts and ball joint nuts and drive shaft centre bolt as they are stretch "one use only" bolts only a few £ a set . I believe complete wishbones are about £88 each .

If memory serves me right I think I paid about £270 for poly bushes fitted by a Volvo inde.

I changed mine the other day, got the rhs to do in the morning, not too much of a dificult job with the right tools, put the powerflex ones in mine, only changed the front mount on the wishbones, rear seem fine atm. total cost approx £30 and a whole day trying to get the 'tools' and technique.

Just had the lower wishbones plus front track control arms replaced today with genuine Volvo parts at a local independent Volvo specialist on my 2002 V70 D5 auto. Also had the car MOT'd plus given a courtesy car.

Total bill was a shade over £600.

I reckon they were the original parts that have been replaced, so hopefully the new ones should be good for the next 120,000 miles too?

Last couple of things that need doing (famous last words) are the soft turbo hose and rear antiroll bar to be replaced. They can be done on subsequent services as not desperate at the moment.

overhere ( The Netherlands ) a few members of the Dutch Volvo forum have set up a rotating system
1 had a spare wishbone set - an other wants to renew - picks up the spare set - places the new parts ( most go for a powerflex set ) - replace the complete wishbones with the new bushes - and his old one goes the next one who wants to replace

perhaps an idea for some over in UK ?

I recently (May) had both wishbones changed by a Volvo independent, but with the genuine part from Volvo. I had been tipped off that Volvo had them on offer to trade customers at just over £50 +vat. When I mentioned this to the independent he agreed to pass the savings on to me. I don't have a break down of the labour for just the wishbones, but to do all the work the car needed (both wishbones, front pads, new handbrake shoes and replace anti-roll bar) I was charged £140 which I thought was a fair price.

It maybe worth challenging any garage to see if the Volvo 'offer' to trade is still on going.

..thats why if anything you pull the driveshaft out of the gearbox ;)

Much easier to just undo the driveshaft bolt and slide the hub off it and swing it back a bit ...

Hi all, I did mine this week on a D5 which hast the same diveshafts and wishbones. I got the powerbushes purple ones and the scanteck patterns from partsforvolvos.

I got a main dealership volvo garage to swap the bushes for £15 cash sir - no receipt...I did have to wait for two 1/2 hours while they were doing more legitimate work..and they fitted me in..

On reassy, I learned - having got the rear bush into the chassis,,,,,,

It is almost impossible to reassemble ball joint without bagging extra clearance -

methods..
1 - as mentioned take the bolt from end of driveshaft and push the shaft in - This pushes the bottom of the strut out to enable you to get the bottom ball joint back in. Only then can you get the bolts thru the front bush bar.

2 (mainly for S60 D5) If you ever had click on taking up drive the hub splines may have been potted in loctite driveshaft cement. (As volvo dealers did between 2003 and 2005 on S60 Diesel models) You req about 5tons force to slide the shaft out of the hub - So dont even try..
In this case you undo the two big bolts that run horizontal at the bottom of the strut - this drops the hub complete , allowing easy movement of the end of the strut and assemply of the ball joint then the front bush bolts.


You must be careful here generally as I originally pulled an wiggled the bottom of the strut an stretched the inner CV gaitor in doing so, and the balls fell out into the cup half of the cv joint- this went bad as I didnt realise this and reassembled. When the road wheels first turned there was a graunch and a boing - the balls had jammed- and pinged. Upon dissembly and inspection the cage/shell holding the balls had a hairline crack in it.... I ground this out and buzzed a fill on Mig , dressed it and reassembled with new 21mm balls from simplybearings web site. So far smooth and sigh of releif as the refurbished driverside shaft is a cool £350 exchange !!!!!!!!! from Volvo dealer.

Old 'bones are cleaned of road "gunk", checked and re-bushed ready for next user. Mine were even painted up in black which protects the bare aluminium surface from all the winter salt and muck.

Bolts were renewed but by my local friendly spanners. Not sure where he got 'em from. I just gave him a pile of bits (shocks, springs, drop links, wishbones) and asked "please fit these".
