I recently bought a S80 D5 163hp car 2003. The engine has been changed for a newer 26000 miles 2006 engine of the same capacity. The software is unchanged. The new engine went in straightaway without any start up problems. The fuel consumption is amazing. We have just returned from annual holiday in Ireland. We did 1700 miles, and in the UK cruised at 80 on the M40 and M6. Obviously, it was much slower in Ireland. Over the 1700 miles, the fuel consumption has averaged out at 53mpg. Prior to holiday running around London it has returned 43mpg. I think this is brilliant, can anyone improve on these figures?

Are those the computer calculated figures or the brim to brim fill up ones you calculated yourself?

If they are the onboard computer ones you should get some brim to brim ones as the later engine has different injectors and you may be getting opimistic readings.

The D5 is a very economical engine though and the S80 has a nice aerodynamic shape so I wouldn't expect it to be too far out.

I'd second Roys cautionary note about the on-board computer.

The computer is telling me I average about 47mpg, but I have caluclated it over the last 4000 miles and it is almost exactly 41mpg.

Having said that, I'm massively impressed by the result, it is an S80 automatic and I do a lot of stop-start driving on the M25. 41mpg is a better return than my old 1.4 petrol Peugeot 307!

My average in my S60 D5 over 6000 miles calculated is 42 mpg which I am happy with.

i haven't had my s60 that long but i've been getting 43 mpg fairly consistantly when i fill up with bp fuel. a couple of weeks ago i changed the oil filter and filled up with mobil 1 oil. without changing any driving habits i've got 49mpg again with some consistancy. those figures are from mileage covered and litres of fuel purchased, my cars poverty spec and doesn't have a fuel computer. mobil's damn dear stuff but worth every penny, my advice is look on ebay for the best deals. my previous car was a nissan primera which i owned for ten trouble free years, once out of warranty and once all the servicing vouchers were finished i always serviced the car myself with mobil 1 and always got good fuel economy. the nissan garage used semi synthetic shell helix and i used to get 34 mpg. on mobil1 i got about 38, not bad for a 2.0 petrol.

You don't say what year car, but for a D5 Volvo recommned the oil should be 0-30 and meet the A5/B5 spec and Mobil one doesn't. You'll get better fuel consumption with the recommended oil.

it's a 2002 car with 120000 on the clock. using mobil 1 i get much better fuel economy (49 mpg) and wont be going back to the previous oil. i know from experiance that it gives great results, everything from improved mpg through to cleaner emmisions.

Mobil 1 is a good oil ,but not as high a spec as the one Volvo recommend.

What oil where you using before as a matter of interest.?

Hello Rashley,

Are you sure those figures are correct ?
> 1'700 Miles X 1.612 = 2'740.40 Km
> S80, Tank capacity = 70 Ltrs
> Consumption per 100km = 70 / 27.4040 = 2.554 ltrs
> Concidering the size and weight of your car, this would be an amazing value, I personally think there is something incorrect here.
> My Proposal: Fill up your car and see far far you get until the orange "tanking light" ignites on your dashboard.
> From my point of view, realistic consumption values are 33 - 43 mpg.
> That's the experience I face with my V70D5, 185 Bhp engine Volvo.

Best Regards

Paul

I agree with this advice. Use recomended grade and type. Warrenty may be affected if applicable. Secondly if the car has a particulate filter then sulphated ash content may be a problem on certain oils. Mobil 1 is a good oil, but only in correct application.
I don't work for Volvo or any oil company, but have done some research into cost/ quality figures. My V50 uses std 5/30 semi syn oil and my old V70 2.4 170 used std Shell Helix 10-40 semi. Both cars were serviced to spec correctly by Volvo; V70 averaged 35mpg over 70k miles and currently v50 averaging 49.4mpg.

Driving style key to getting good figures. Car condition is a given so won't even mention usual things.

I get between 45-47mpg - calculated.

DIM MPG value under reads by about 0.5 MPG so consider that to be accurate.

If I cruise on the motorway I get around 55 MPG.

In town driving it drops to the mid 30's.

This is with the 2004 163 BHP engine.

I also think this is pretty impressive for the size of the car, but the body design is very slipery, and the flush underside also helps more than you would think.

The underneath is critical as that's where the air can't move around so easily if it becomes very turbulant and generates drag from all the bits and pieces under the car. The XC90 isn't too good in this respect. My computer mpg calculation is about 3.5 mpg optimistic. My true calculated motorway mpg is 38.5 mpg. at the moment.

WOW! I can't wait until Volvo gives us here in the USA a crack at the D5 engine in 2009. My 2001 V70 2.4 Petrol Estate averages 32 MPG on long trips and only 19 MPG around town. I do haul about 150 Kg of equipment with me at all times. Bring on the Diesel.:biggrin2:

Don't forget American gallons are smaller than UK ones.

:hissyfit:I knew it was too good to be true! Oh well, I'll have to look up the converions just for my own benefit then. Now it makes sense why everyone on this forum gets better mileage than me. Thank you for pointing it out Roy.

After conversion from US to Imperial gallons, I end up with 23MPG around town and 39MPG straight Highway for a 2.4 Petrol V70.
I still want the Diesel. I saw and arcticle from IPDUSA.com that rated your Euro D5 very Highly. Cheers.

Those figures tally with my old shape V70 2.4. The Claimed 41 mpg on the extra urban cycle (UK gauge) was in my experience hard to achieve.
By the way when you get the D5 engine in the US what you will immediately notice is the extra performance. Compared to a non turbo 2.4 petrol, it's a rocket. Even my 2.0D 136bhp on my V50 is much quicker in most situations than the V70.

Had a S60 D5 163 since May 2005 - purposely not re-set mpg figure which now reads 51.9 . Mixed useage and I`m well pleased with this.
