I've got the base bog standard SC-802 head unit without cd or changer fitted to my 98 V70 T5 SE. Seen a HU-605 head unit on fleabay, does anybody know whether or not it could be fitted as a direct replacement?

Yes this certainly can be done. I've done a similar thing (SC-805 to HU-655) on my '99 V70 Classic. Though you can slot the HU-605 directly into the slot in which the SC-802 currently resides. you must also avail yourself of some wiring harnesses (also available from fleabay):

1) To go from the plugs in the back of the SC-802 to ISO industry standard plugs: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/adaptor-connector-VOLVO-S-V-40-70-2000-ISO-autoleads_W0QQitemZ180169721540QQihZ008QQcategoryZ 1498QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

2) To go from the ISO plugs into the Volvo plugs on the back of the HU-605: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Volvo-Anschlusskabell-Adapter-ISO-Neue-Stecker-2-81_W0QQitemZ150171978052QQihZ005QQcategoryZ14267QQ ssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem (I'm sure you can buy these in the UK as well but cannot for the life of me find one right now)

3) To take the antenna currently in the back of the SC-802 into the square socket on the back of the HU-605: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Antenne-Adapter-VOLVO-Adapterkabel-auf-ISO-Radio-Einbau_W0QQitemZ280160804897QQihZ018QQcategoryZ274 48QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem (only available from continental Europe or the US I'm afraid; I find the European ones seem more sturdy)

You can, of course, make your own wiring harness (I did, twice!) but this takes a fair amount of time and patience.

Hope this is helpful,

Top dollar info!

I've placed my bid for the HU and I'll sit and wait for a day or two to see if I've won!

Thanks

You're most welcome. I forgot to add that when I put a 655 into my V70 I was staggered by the improvement in sound quality. They're not too powerful (unless you jack them up to an amplifier) but these units do sound great.

Hello Paul,
I found your links to the e-bey about connecting old connectors to HU-605 volvo radio. I thought they may help me to connect HU-605 in to my 98 V40
with connectors that "could be appropriate" to the SC-805..
But all links you posted here are expired..?!
Do you know where I can go to solve this problem.
thanks

Bernard B.
