auto box and intercooler

Had a message on my dash saying I needed a transmission service went to the dealer and they said that I needed a transmission down load. So I had that done £80.00 this has turned the light off and stopped the car going into neutral at traffic lights when sat in drive.
All seams well so far, they said that I could do with a gearbox oil change as this has never been done 145k. Talked to pre owner he said that Volvo dealer said not to do this, but then I have been told that it could do with doing by Volvo and by an automatic specialist. Do I have this done or just save myself £100.00 ???

They also said that I need a new intercooler as it is leaking, had a listen myself and they are probably right. Took the car for inspection of the intercooler pipes at my friends garage and they all seemed ok.

Been quoted £375 inc vat fitted by a ex Volvo main dealer in Halifax that seems ok.

Well not bad considering that the part is £192.00 +_vat

Car is Driving fine but fuel economy is a bit poor, this is affected by the intercooler they say.

So Do I have the gear oil done and the intercooler?

Please help I still have a wind noise at rear (what the hell is it driving me MAD)

£100 is too cheap to replace the oil in the autobox. If you're going to have it done, get it fully flushed, which will take way more than £100 worth of ATF. If it is not flushed properly then most of the original oil will remain in there, which kind of defeats the object...

At this mileage, it could probably do with it too. Volvo say sealed for life, but then the official lifespan of a car appears to be 100k these days, so at 145, it is probably a good idea.

Do the intercooler too, common fault and it will help the car no end.

What happens to these intercoolers to make them leak thought that they would be nice and safe being between the rad and a/c rad.

Done 11k in 4 months so wind noise is driving me mad...........!

Has anyone got a wind noise from the rear of there s60 ?

I get a bit of wind noise too, I guess its just how they are?

No idea why the intercoolers leak, at a guess it could be corrision because of where they are situated - right at the front.

I have had a play yesterday when I fitted my rear h/brake shoes and cleaned my mixer/plenum

Boot lid seal seams very flattened so I have adjusted boot lid again and threaded some electrical wire into the seal to pad it out a bit, see what happens next week will be doing 700 miles + again, on first name terms with the fuel station.

I'd change the autobox oil at least every 60,000 miles. Saab use the same autobox and that's their recommendation, and it's more reliable in the Saab.

Though Volvo do say to change it (on my service sheet at least) at 4 years or 48,000 miles in adverse conditions. In the UK I'd say all gearboxes operate under adverse conditions. I'd use a full synthetic ATF as well.

When I had mine replaced at 65k is wasn't damaged by road objects, it was the pressure inside, it had changed the usual ( cross sectional) flatish airways into almost round tubes at the base of the intercooler then they split. Not sure why it does it at the base more than the top but the outer airways have no strength from the surounding tubes. I believe this the usual reason rather than object damage & it is very common. Hope this helps
