Hi all,

I've recently upgraded from a 1.8 S40 to a V40 03 DS with a D4192 T3 115bhp engine, in the hope of better mpg. I filled up this morning, trying to get an accurate reading from brim to brim on fill ups. It works out on a combined mpg of 41, which is a bit poor to the books figure of 52. Has anyone else had this problem or has any idea if this is a normal sort of mpg. (by the way my car has covered 84,000 miles, not particularly high for these cars. and i've been driving like an old lady!!)

Thanks

Two people on here reviewing their diesel V40s say they get between 40-45mpg and theirs may be the 90bhp model, if so you are not doing bad?

I've seen all over the net the combined figure of 52 but I think the motorway figures are normally based on a long unrealistic journey at say 55-60mph with absolutely no slowing down, stopping, etc which doesn't really tend to happen in real life? And possibly their combined figures are 50 per cent exactly of each type of drive which maybe your calculations aren't? I've found around town with my 940 that the best economy isn't related to speed at all but how quickly I change up the box, I'm finding I'm up into top at speeds I wouldn't have thought the car would handle and getting as much as 5mpg + difference.

I do about 13 miles each way to work, about 9 of them on the motorway. My 2004 V40 115 bhp returns about 41 on the trip computer, though when I measure manually it does work out a bit better.

I find the wife's 2003 S40 1.9d gets about 45 on mixed town driving but the computer only shows 42. On a run 75-85mph it gets 50-55mpg.

I found after 50,000 miles the EGR was very caked up so cleaned it to get the economy up to what I have posted as before it was about 10% lower.

I've got a 2004 S40 115bhp Diesel and i get about 43-44 out of it

Most of its motorway with abit of town driving and i don't mess about so it gets abit of stick (13 miles of motorway and 7 miles of A roads to work is its usual trip)

Went to edinburgh a couple of months ago and managed 48mpg out of it, about a 500 mile round trip plus driving round edinburgh while we were there

I don't consider 44mpg to be bad out of it, altho i do drive it quiet hard. I think 52mpg's been abit optimistic really

I have a 2002 S40 T3 (115bhp) which has averaged 52mpg over 17k miles. This on a 50 mile daily commute on country roads, with gentle driving (50+mph) and a few minutes of town traffic each way. I do try to minimise use of the brakes (it wears them out), so as to avoid rubbing off expensive energy - when I can do so without annoying following drivers.

A motorway trip at (ahem) 70-ish mph returned 48mpg.

i have the 102bhp (with tunning box) running on arcadias (17x45x215) by paper i get a minimum of 47mpg and had upto 50.5mpg. it drops to low 40s without the box. with the 15x60x195 wheels i was consistently in the 50s(without box) commuting 78miles a day.
