Hi,
Just thinking maybe it would be good to se how many miles these Volvo's can do,if you post your miles, model, and age of car and any probs you've had we could get a really good thread on the go.

See who's got the highest mileage!

Mine's on 95k on a 51 plate

2005 s60 d5 113k

although before this i had a vectra sold with 186k on it, original timing chain :) (had no issues with it until i fitted one of those dodgy tuning chips*still bitter*, would still have it now if i twasn't for that, but then i wouldn't of had such a fab car now ;)

before that a cavlier with 174k on , sold it to a friend who scrapped it at 195k :(

i'm hoping this car will last a long time based on the fact i'm hoping volvo make better engines than vauxhall!

I'm hoping Volvo make a better engine than VW as the last two mk4 golf diesels i've had have been rubbish to be perfectly honest!

Hope my V40 fairs better,still with 95k it's only a baby!

My S80 D5 2002 (owned for about 6mths) has done 135K and the engine is A1. I do worry sometimes about an injector problem I've heard about on engines made in about 2002, but, touch wood, no problems so far.

Hi, this is my first post, I find all your comments very interesting. I am intrested in buying a 1 to 2 year old S80 D5 auto and would appreciate some feedback from you experienced bloggers!
I'm interested in opting out of a company car scheme, I currently have a 2 year old diesel Honda CRV This is a company car, the lease is up in Dec the car will have done 75k, I do 37k a year. Although it is very practical, I find the build quality very poor when comparing it to two S60 D5's I've had in the past. Both were company cars 164bhp S model, and over the 2 years I had each of them covered 70k/75k before going back. I didn't get a squeak or rattle out of each of the S60's the Honda has numerous problems..
I plan to opt out of my company scheme, take a lump sum in my salary and save the company car tax. I prefer the NEW S80, as the S60 was a little small for the kids in the back and the boot was a little small.
I've done all my sums, and think I would be quid's in if a bought a S80 for around 13k. I would probably run it for 3 years, put intergalactic mileage on it,180k (have an extend warranty) but make some good money in the process. Any one any Ideas how many miles this car should be good for? or am I mad!!!
Are they really as bullet proof as I think?
Thanks in anticipation for any feedback.

replaced turbo due to low quality oil used once, air-con compressor and alternator clutch pulley. It will need new rear springs and shock absorbers and to identify where does it the whoosh is coming from when I press the throttle. Quite difficult to spot because there is no black smoke and only on the run, when standing quite difficult to identify.

Thinking to upgrade it to a newer d5 s60 or s80, but heard that the fuel consumption is 20% worse, so I will keep the car till is gone die :P.

Had fuel injector problem :( at aroun 60K miles; had two replaced by a local diesel injection specialist (Doctor Diesel, Oswestry)... cost about £650, main dealer wanted >£1K, plus they were rude.

Had adjustable steering column lock break at 4yrs of age, so steering telescoped in and out whilst driving, made for an interesting experience (and must have looked a little strange), net result was around £600 of expense, Volvo foot half the bill.

Had discs changed and new pads at about 65K miles by main dealer, shortly thereafter one of back brakes seized. Took it to local Volvo specialist and the drum mechanism had been punctured and had then corroded (strange it was only a few months after main dealer had 'renewed all necessary components and changed hydraulic fluid'). I believe the brake inside the handbrake drum had separated. The fuel economy was down, there was a build up of brake dust all over the wheel and you could smell burning! I don't think the wheel had completely seized. There is more written on this subject elsewhere on this forum.

Fuel economy around 46mpg (manual), mixed driving

Now then, have a '51 plate D5 chipped tp 200 bhp, just passed 171,500, first real problem is the Split in Intercooler feed pipe from Air Intake. Oh the tensioner on the back of the Alternator went at around 160,000-was £160 replacement. But apart from that awesome Svensk Engineering !! I drive 1250 miles per week, up and down the A1, sits at 80 ish, usually get 40-45 mpg, you really cannot fault it with this level of comfort and reliabilty-Cheeooors

S60 D5 SE 03 Plate - 115800 miles.

I've done about 9k in 8 months, but I haven't been lucky!

Rear drivers side brake failure a month after buying, cost £300 plus to rectify, second hand hub, new brake internals, new discs and pads (both sides)

THEN, Rear left hand caliper started binding, burnt the paint off my lovely new Volvo brake disc and needed a new caliper and pads (PAds both sides) - £180 ish

THEN! Two injectors failed along with my in tank pump, £900 later it's sorted other than it needs to pop back into the garage as one of the changed injectors is puffing (blowing past the sealing washer).

I've also changed the headlight wipers!

So, not a good start to Volvo ownership if I'm honest, I've NEVER had to spend so much on a car! It would have cost half as much if I had the time to fix myself, but I work away so it has to get done in the specialists.

Still, with that lot done, I'm expecting at least 100k without anymore big bills! (I know!)

Superb car when its well though, puffing injector aside, it's running well now, very strong performance and very refined.

I won't buy a diesel again though, the cost of injectors, pumps, filters etc far outweighs the benefits of the (frankly amazing on the D5 S60) fuel economy.

If you do a lot of mileage however, I doubt there is a better equipped, quality vehicle for the money.

However, if I do replace this car, a T5 or R is on my shopping list.

I have an S80 D5 2005 that has 147,000+ miles on it , great car, but its cost me a few quid in the 8 odd months I have had it, new front wishbones, front and rear droplinks, front balljoints, new front struts(truely horrendious as I have 4C suspension), new disks and pads all round, still got a few annoying rattles when I go over speed bumps, but the engine and manual gearbox are terrific, on a run the computer says mid fifties, all in all a decent enough car, Just out of curiosisty, does anyone know of a good local volvo mechanic that might help me diagnose the annoying rattles, I stay in Ayr about 30 miles south of Glasgow

Fixed remote locking(made 1 good fob from the 2 duffers), replaced antenna ring due to occasional non-starts, and car booked in for timing/injector pump belts and a brief service. Goes well, stops well, rattles a lot less than a mates audi s3 08 reg! Love the car - had 850 2.5 petrol before, 195,000 miles, good solid motor but thirstier than George Best....
Superb amount of car for 600 quid - I ain't going back!

Cheers

We got our 52 plate D5 S60 4 1/2yrs ago with 61k on it. dash packed up on it at 14mths and 148k, the wife does over 60k per year so we are well over 300k and appart from the dash and brakes, all I do is service it every 6k ish, timing belt once a year and a new set of michelin pilot primacys every 4 mths or so.
All in all the best car ive ever had for reliability, We are sadly looking to replace it with an Alfa Brera(her choice!) so we will not be courting reliability for much longer!
The old S60 will be staying as a spare as its basically worthless.

it's not a Volvo but a few years ago my Dad asked me to put his Merc horse transporter on eBay for him but kept avoiding answering when i asked him for the mileage. In the end i had to go round and see for myself; no wonder really when i saw it had over half a million miles on the clock.

I've got a V-reg (2000) V40 Diesel (Renault Laguna/Megane Engine)
Bought in 2002 at 79k, now at 169k, mostly motorway.
Work done on it so far over the 9 years I've had it:

- EGR pipe
- Cam + Aux belt
- PAS pump
- All pulleys
- Gear linkage bushes

The alternator bearing is gone now so need to a rebuild. And need to think about ALL gaskets as there's a small but steady oil leak
Apart from that, nothing else mechanically wrong. Strong as a tank. Worked out 40 - 41mpg!

So far, up to just over 257,000 miles on a '96 855 TDI. The last 30,000 or so have been done on waste vegetable oil with a two-tank conversion.

It has lost some power over the last year (not so much that it can't pull a big trailer, but noticeably less spritely) so will be starting a thread to help diagnose!

I have commented this before, but I haven't seen any Volvo's reaching high miles on veggie oil.

If it does 227,000 OK on diesel and starts losing power after 30,000 on veggie oil that tells you something I think.

My 2004 V70 D5 Auto is currently at 279,000 miles - had it from new. So far apart from consumables, brakes and 3 timing belts I've only had to spend money on a crankshaft oil seal and front suspension bushes. Still average 45 - 50mpg, usually well loaded. Transmission good as gold and still all the power it ever had.

I'm hoping Volvo make a better engine than VW as the last two mk4 golf diesels i've had have been rubbish to be perfectly honest!

Hope my V40 fairs better,still with 95k it's only a baby!

Keep the mileages coming people

I know your post was from a looooong time ago but you must have been VERY unlucky, we have three mk4 1.9TDI Golf diesels in our family that have covered 132,000 (51), 165,000 (51 - mine) and 187,000 (02), we also have a Seat Toledo with the same engine that's covered 112,000 (51) and not one of them have caused any problems whatsoever.

However I recently purchased a V70 2.5D with 162,000 on the clock, the owner proudly told me that it would eat my Golf for breakfast but I have to say its been a disappointment, so much so that I kept my Golf (thank God!) and have now listed the V70 on eBay, it honestly feels like I'm driving a hearse around!

So if anyone's interested in a cheap V70 diesel have a look http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120821745412?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649#ht_2793wt_1344

I've had 4 volvos since 1979.

1st was a 240 estate petrol -198000 miles.
2nd was a 240 diesel -220000 miles -sold as a hay transporter on a farm (off-road.
3rd was a 740 diesel -cylinder head gasket went at 187,000, and big-end at 235000 miles.
4th is a 850 tdi, red manual diesel, currently being offered for sale/parts on this site since yesterday - 220,000 mile.

Seems as if the ones I've had - all Volvo serviced - become too expensive and rusty beyond about 220000 miles!

1. 245 estate Petrol 213,000 miles - death due to rust!
2. 245 estate diesel 198,000 miles - sold on as an off-road hay carrier on a farm
3. 740 estate Diesel 238,000 odd miles - never right after a cylinder gasket failed at about 188,000 miles, then terminal big-end failure at about 238,000 miles
4. 850 tdi estate - still going at 220,000 miles, although the bodywork/suspension need fixing - currently on this site for repair/spares

My current one is a V70 D5.

Mine rolled over 225k last week.

Since the last update (210k) it had a second-hand turbo (£150, plus 2 evenings to fit) at 217k after the original (I presume - nothing in the history to say it's had one before) failed spectacularly, both pneumatic engine mounts (~£170) at 224k, and I finally got around to replacing the clutch master cylinder which has been weeping since I bought it (into the interior, causing the position switch to fail, and the cruise to refuse to work!).

I've never been that happy with the idle quality, and since I bought my VIDA/DICE rig, I've been using the injector diagnostics to keep an eye on that. All bar one of mine are out of spec (±3mm^3, IIRC), but one is much worse than the others. I'm going to perform a leak-off test ASAP, and then refer it to a diesel specialist if the results are nasty.

So, it has given me a few bills in the past few months, and if I need an injector (or two) that won't be cheap, but each bill so far has been less than that month's fuel saving, and there is still a significant overall saving...plus, when it's done, it's done. The other saving grace is that lower mileage cars seem no better behaved - the D5s just aren't as "robust" as their petrol cousins. It's still worth it (and by a big margin) for a high mileage user.

cheers

Hello

Buried in this long thread may already be an answer to this.....

When my garage changed the crankshaft pulley, they let me peek inside the engine. There we saw the VW symbol! Although I thought my V70 had an Audi engine, rebuilt by Volvo, the mechanic said it's identical to the 2.5l TDi on the VW Transporters he services for a local business. not a Volvo but a former colleauges dad had a VW Passat Mk 1 from 1978( bought new) , in 2009 it had nearly 900K on the clock- original engine, filters and fluids changed every 6000 miles for the 1st 100K then every 10K. I lost contact with my colleague in late 2009 so dunno if it is still running.

Just got a 54 plate S60 D5, the 163bhp engine. I came from a seat leon cupra r which was remapped, to a 3 litre alfa romeo gtv, then followed a campervan and now this. Definitely my favourite car of the lot. Bought it with 85k on the clock, and in a month I've got it to 89k. Sounds like at 89k she is just a baby which is what I was expecting.

One of my old rugby coaches had an 850 with 495,000 though, the only thing he had done was the gearbox apparently.

My 1996 850 estate TDI done 197000 miles.... Bought last september, I knew it needed some work, I Just changed gearbox after 5th gear shreadded on me, replaced both control arms, front wheel barings, outer cv joints... Then flew through MOT...Engine is still strong, think I have a niggle developing with either maf or exhaust sensor altering the power output occasionally, and there's a little too much oil in the turbo pipes for my liking, so looking to replace turbo too unless I find the oil is getting there some other way, not yet looked into. :)

My 2005 V70 D5 is having some injector issues at present...currently at 243k. In fairness, there are plenty of stories of injectors needing TLC at under 100k, so I'm not blaming that purely on age.

Intercooler replaced

Altenator replaced

Number plate lighting loom failed....crap design as wire bends on boot hinge.

Exhaust cracked behind cat but repaired (welded) still on original exhaust

Several headlight bulbs...main beam is still less efficient than my wife's focus!

Engine system required message appears when revved over 2.5k but car never goes into limp mode.....same message now for a couple of years with no difference to performance.

Air con needs a refill....never done !

Average MPG as recorded on DIM 50.2mpg over the total mileage (never reset)

Engine has lost low end acceleration....not too surprising given age and mileage but sits all day at over the legal limit !

Well I was at 80,000 and it broke. V70 D5 Oct 2002 (MY03) one owner (me). CSV went two weeks ago and it was due for cambelt + extras, IC was blowing and vac controlled mounts suspect.

I'm having the whole lot replaced including clutch and DMF and looking forward to another 10 years of ownership.

I've replaced one injector and the air charge hose. Other than that it's just cost the annual service.

05 V70 D5 on 123,000, bought it a month ago and so far I love it!! Cheap as chip from the auctions and with a full service history, cambelt done etc.

New rear shocks (£100, fitted) made it stop rattling and start cornering, upgrade on the handbrake shoe link (£18, easy DIY job) made the handbrake adjust and work, and best fix of all - a £10 bottle of Redex diesel additive made the turbo vanes stop sticking when you boot it up the motorway slip roads and the engine no longer goes into limp (or lame) mode, plus the engine pulls and runs like new.

Volvo forum rocks for getting answers - don't bother with Haynes Manual, most of the stuff you need to know isn't in it ....Now, about that alarm siren battery ....

Hi guys,
first message here on the board, German living in France, but married to an Irish, so I came across this forum, which is better than anything I could find in either France or Germany. You guys just seem to be the better DIYers.

Anyway, Volvo V40 1.9D (seems to be the Renault engine) 110K and it really starts falling apart :-(. I just repaired the electronics board with the knobs for heating and AC (well didn't repair, just resoldered the connections of the knobs).

The something broke in the indicator lever, but thanks to a post here I got it out and repaired that too, just a little thingy holding a spring.

And now, turbo blown :broken_heart:, the friendly person at the dealers said some words beginning with two and thousand, before I lost conscience.

So, the good old time, where the 740 would run forever are gone :-(

You might find the new MOT emissions test interesting as they will rev the engine, so I would think about trying a can of Liqui Moly (Or BG etc) direct feed injection cleaner (It can be poured into the fuel filter) and a serious Sunday morning motorway trip just before that test. Also I hope you have not fiddled with the MAP, as that can cause black smoke when booted.
