Well 21 years..time to do the front seats. Both backs are slightly twisted inward. Struts problem apparently.

Foam cushions and foam back cushions were not easy to find. Volvo and IPD do the backs but not the seat.

Braydon did the foam for £18 each but the covers came from Volvo Sweden: Not cheap.

I have read the reconstruction of the seats on this forum but the stretching and hog pliers look skilled, so I have booked local Trim Shop for 26th July.

Looking forward to looking over the steering wheel again after all these years, and the wife will stop complaining of uncomfortable seats.

The refurbished alternator (£48) is working well.

The front Michelin Agilis 185R14 8 ply are close to replacement on the front. New go on the back and all wheels balanced, front realigned.

The front tyres where put on the back at 305906 miles, now 435300 so a cheap quality tyre.

I have a really great V70 T5, have had it for 2 years now, although it has not been without it's troubles! 1st it got laid up because of the notorious issues with the ABS that a lot of volvo's suffer from, got that one sorted without to much expense, much to the disappointment of many volvo specialists, and now it has developed a fault in the air-con department. It all appears to be working fine, all lights illuminating, fan runnining, air-con automatically switches on when demister deployed etc, the only thing it doesn't do is cool the interior of the car! Last year, just before the ABS issue, the system was cleaned and re-gassed and worked just like new, fab! After the car was laid up for about 9 months with the ABS fault I had to replace the battery as being out of action for so long killed it, I only seem to be stuck with this problem since then, have only used the air-con twice since being back in action and noticed something was up then. Anyone with any ideas would be a great help. And if anyone has any issues with the ABS warning light coming on and off or staying on, I may be able to help, thanks folks, happy motoring.

Bought one of them Coby DVD player things and put that in the back for the little one. Great sound, good picture - well worth the £70 I paid for it down Halfords. comes with headphones too if you can get them to stay in a 2yr olds ear!

Bit of a strange old visit to volvo. I was happy immediately afterwards, presuming everything had been fairly straightforward. You may have read in my posts about how it seemed to be a good idea for all concerned.
A couple of points to mention;
On the phone, when I first spoke to them, I was told it would take 2 hours to carry out my free volvo healthcheck.
On arrival, I was told it would take about 45 mins (after the guy had disappeared into an office for a while)
It actually only took 22 mminutes.
Thats quite a leap from 2 hours.
When the guy came back (salesman, not mmechanic, I never met the mechanic), he barely spoke to me. He gave me the keys and read off the result.
The result;
Worn brake pads, reg plate bulb out and 2 split brake flexis.
Only problem is-I've had a look today and theres nothing wrong with it.
Now is that strange or what?
Ps. The reason I got in touch with them in the first place was to find an owers handbook for my car. The guy said that it was still on order and that it would be.......£22.
Seriously.
Ebay it is then (I've already let about 15 pass me by thinking volvo would be on the ball)

I bought the 850 GLT as a temporary car until my truck was sold or taken off the road to be restored properly. I picked it up in Devon on Saturday...

I bought the 850 GLT as a temporary car until my truck was sold or taken off the road to be restored properly. I picked it up in Devon on Saturday Feb 27th and drove the 180 miles back relatively trouble free. The only bother was the ciggie lighter didn't work so I couldn't get my sat nav. Oh, and there was no stereo.
en route I noticed the heated seats don't work, the wipers were old and knackered, the mirrors don't work, the rear cargo cover has no tension and there was a slight leak from the engine. Other than that, she purred all the way home.
first things first and I checked and replaced about 6/7 fuses. Sweet, the ciggie lighter works. Whipped down to Halfords and replaced the wipers and picked up a stereo and the fitting kit. Ordered a service kit online and left it at that. Went out Sunday and fitted the stereo in minutes, sweet - everything plugged in and hey presto one mp3 stereo with usb fitted and working. first time I'd fitted a stereo that worked without smoke coming from anywhere!
Started on the service, replaced the air filter. Went to remove the spark plug cover only to come undone at the 2nd torq bolt that was absolutely buggered. Not having the tools to extract the bolt, I left it at that. thought sod it, i won't carry on as there's not much point - I wanted to do everything at once.
So left that and then played with the back end and managed to get the cargo cover to tense up again, so that works now. Had a scout around the web for a fix for the seats/mirrors so checked a few things all to no avail though as everything it said to check, checked out ok.
A week in and the speedo stopped working. Bollocks. So 3 days later and I'm heading off to the dealer to get the bits to do the speedo fix when it all started working again, so that pleased me.
Came home, and fitted the passenger visor that had arrived in the post. Afterwards gave her a thorough wash and was pleasantly surprised to find a very solid Volvo underneath it all. She's just rolled over 186000 miles but all the mechanical bits work fine, kickdown and even sports/economy mode which is nice. Found out it returns about 25 round town which is great compared to my trucks 10 or so mpg. since then I've not done a lot. Waiting to get a buggered screw/bolt removal kit so I can give it a service this weekend or next depending on what wife has planned for me.

First things first.
On 25/2/2010, I bought a 2002 Volvo S40 1.8 SE.
It had 71k on the clock and cost me just short of £3000.
My previous car was a Vauxhall Astra (just so you know where I'm coming from when I begin to make comparisons).
So far, I'm very happy with it, regardless of the fact that I payed a bit over the odds for it. When I was waiting to pick it up, I did a lot of reading up about the GDi engine, the coking issue, timing belt intervals etc. I have found since the purchase that I don't have that engine, consequently, I now know a fairly large amount of information about an engine that I've never even seen (unless its exactly the same as the Carisma, in which case I worked on one very briefly last year).
There were a couple of little 'niggles' at first;
Strange sound from what is essentially a very smooth engine. Have learned since that this is normal. Not a scary noise, just like a second note to the engine pitch, if you get my drift.
Also, some difficulty in selecting 1st and reverse gears. Of course, this issue is well-documented on this forum and elsewhere as worn or damaged gearshift mounting bushes, which, to be honest, sounds like a straightforward procedure. I intend rectifying this fault sometime this month and will post anything I think may be useful.
There may be some issue surrounding the gearbox oil. I have learned somewhere (and can't judge the accuracy of the info) that it is due to be replaced at around 76k but I'll have a word with the chap at Volvo when I'm there.
Which leads me to this; Now I'm pretty sure that they're just touting for business but when I emailed Volvo to ask about finding an owners handbook, they gave my details to the local Volvo service centre, who called and asked me to bring in my car so they could check it over.
He said they will give the car an all-over inspection.....free of charge.
Never heard of this before, they probably just want to do the servicing and are just being professional. Fine by me, no money leaves my wallet until I've agreed to pay for something so maybe I'll learn something for free. Or maybe they'll instill confidence and I'll end up giving them work.
As this visit is scheduled for before my payday, I'll pick the guys brains about the gearstick bush thing and try and get a good look while its on the ramps. More info on this when I have it.
For now, let me say a few more things before I sign off:
Plus points when compared to the Astra (a 1998 Astra 'G').
Paint-far superior
Fuel economy-down but only by about 10% (and I get more performance for my fuel in the Volvo)
Interior-These are the most comfortable car seats I have ever used.
Actually, now that I think of it, its a pointless comparison as these 2 cars are about as different as its possible to be. Its a bit like comparing the Ford Focus with Turkmenistan.
Making a start steam cleaning the engine bay later on (just steam, no pressure) will let yall know how that goes and maybe post some pics.
Thats way more typing than I'm used to so I'm off.

The Volvo battery had to be replaced at only 3 years. Usually 6 years!!

This is in my opinion due to the failure of the alternator and discharging the battery to 9.5v..........engine kept running though. Wow.

Beware.

All running well now. 80watt altenator from Volvoman and battery fron Volvo.

Volvo battery £60, 80w altertnator £50.
Got to run those LIGHTS.

Hotstart is being difficult. Heating the engine, but won't switch the internal fan to defrost internally. It won't switch the fan on at ~70c.

Removed and tested using soldier flame to switch thermo., and OK. Re-install. No!

Its really cold here now so thought it may be low switching in, so insulated switching thermo. Did'nt work.

Still have to go out in my robe and switch manual fan.............COOOLD option.

Kenlowe have asked to talk to me.

Origonal will be renovated.
The cylinder head is almost ready for collection but needs Volvo sealing rubbers for the valve stems, rubber valve top dampers, cam oil seal, and blank at the end of the cam end to me
One Volvo exhaust valve, all valves lapped, head skimmed. Magnam Engines cost £185.

The black wire to the red onto the alternator confused me. Then I remembered it connected to the caravan battery. All working now.
Two weeks and no warning lights on the dash is not recommended.
The Kenlow hot start was not switching the cab hot fan so I have replaced it with a repaired spare.
Now, the hot water pipes combination to heat the LPG evaporator and the Kenlow hotstart is fun and took time to get right, but does need extra attention with these extra pipes.
The air traps can cause the evaportator to freeze as no hot water gets there and nothing works. The same air trap may effect the Hotsart too.
The LPG has an air bleed; the Hotstart must be be cracked at the top junction, then resealed.

Took a sample of oil for the lab at 408k. No significant metal wear reported. Really pleased.

Took a sample of oil for the lab at 408k. No significant metal wear reported. Really pleased.
Last time the head came off was when Volvo replaced the head gasket due to a slight exhaust leak to coolant at 268k. The Na (sodium) increased from 10 parts per million to 612 ppm. Antifreeze into sump spillage. So I changed both full flow and by-pass fillters, flushed and changed the oil. Not cheap on Amsoil 0/30 fully synthetic. This reduced the Na to 7 ppm. OK.
I changed the head at 407k due to burnt exhaust valve in No. 2 cylinder. Na on analysis 10ppm. So what happended before, when Volvo changed the head gasket?

The auxcillary air valve on the B200E was not working after I got the head on, no earth. Checked out on the green book. Poked the wires beneath the inlets, one seemed loose, hooked it out. Two black wires clipped into a ring connection!! This goes under the cold start bolt to make a perfect earth connection. Perfect idle. Yes.

The red feed from the alternator has separated again, third time, so I have no warning lights when the ignition is on, except oil and hand brake. It means the alternator out again to make the reconnection as the remaining bit of wire is getting so small, it may need new loom to the battery finally cure this. A bit un-nerving running like this.

How can a 245 run on an alternator charge of 9.4v in the dark and keep running??
On a 40ml round run this morning, noticed the wipers seemed to be slow and the headlights dim, the dash dim and the speedo and rev counter doing strange things.
Half way through the journey checked battery with th engine at idle and it gave 9.4 v instead of 14v.
15 miles later I was home although on checking the battery it was dead flat at 10v with engine off!!
Checked the alternator and the near side carbon brush was really worn (little or no contact). Ordered another at £38 but it has to come from Luton now, so delivery to Kings is 16.00hrs.
First set of bushes lasted 254k second 153k so can't complain, just forgot to carry the spare.
Volvoman says the amature will be warn at 406k. So he is sending me an 80w alternator, for £50.
Volvoman is advertising in the Volvo Driver now and (page 21). I am quite impressed with service provided with advice, chat, and expertise over the 'phone. He does know his Volvos.
No connecton!! Just impressed.

I have torqued the bolt for years, plus what I can manage on a 16" leaver.
The important bit is to carefully engange the keys through the belt guides.
The belt drive and the pully key ways. Feel it slowly engage fiddling right and left, tap it in with a lump hammer............feel it though......
Volvo is 60N/M plus 60 degrees rotation. Not easy.
So my when the keys began to slip all timings where at risk.
OK got a scafold pole from A1 hire, free to return, and pulled through 60 degree.
Wow that is tight.
Off on a four hour tow to Cornwall tomorrow, total up weight 2.7 ton. Fun!
Volvoman offered me a 2.3 engine for £150. I was really tempted.
Must keep origonal as much as possible.
Looking for 500k
Brianh

First major engine problem in August, 2 bar pressure on number 2 cylinder. The others were 12b. Mileage 403k miles. Suspect number 3 exhaust valve.

Volvo 'suggested' £1500, indepedant Volvo specialist £600. Volvoman East Yorkshire, posted a head for £75. Took it down to the workshop and they put it through the washer and sure enough it was a good one as it worked very well when I bolted it on. Quite easy on this low tech. B200E engine.

The origonal head had three cracks on number three exhaust valve. Took it to the workshop for a rebuild. No hurry though.

The gasket looks like it's going to be a mess about as it is positioned funny looking at a spare 15g I have,it would be facing towards the engine so the two bolts will be hard to reach.
This mount looks really easy compared to the bottom rear, bottom rear is hard to get to due to the turbo.

The mazda is a v6 and I have intentions of selling it or doing the body work and twin turbos.
To be honest I want rid of the mazda and 2.5 850 so I can do a volvo 480 T5 rear wheel drive which I would keep for life.
I can just picture it on bends now ;-)
