Hi all, wonder if anyone has any thoughts on this issue I'm having. I've muddled my head googling, and with limited technical know how - I'm confused.

I have an S40 D4 R-Design. Back in January, a loony tried overtaking me, clipped my rear sending me into a spin, caused in total £9k of damage to the car. Rear and right side doors + wheels needed replacing.

Just as the car came to a halt, the left front wheel hit the kerb - with enough force to cause the alloy to buckle slightly.

The car has now been "repaired", but I have a problem...

The car is 100% - except for the steering.

I've been back to the repair garage (not a volvo main dealer, my insurer had choice of repair locations) two times with my problem, and they've "geo" checked it, alignment etc. They say everything is ok. But it's not.

The problem
The car now feels like it's pulling to the left much more than normal. When braking, the steering judders, and pulls to the left. The steering does not judder when going in a straight line, so it isn't wheel balance. When turning the wheel, or making small correction at speeds of above 35mph, the steering wheel feels like it's "kicking" slightly.

I don't know if this makes any sense, but it seems a lot more pronounced when cornering downhill. If I corner on an uphill slope, it is much less pronounced. Going downhill and braking from speed is actually quite scary now. There's quite a bit of squeaking coming from the left wheel too when braking on a downhill corner...

There is also much more tyre noise than there used to be.. And, when turning left at low speed, there is a mechanical grinding squeak/grind noise. Like metal that isn't greased?

The guys at the "repair" shop says everything is running straight and true, and that it could be a brake caliper or rotor issue. He said something about brake runoff?? (i.e. nothing to do with the accident, so sod off and leave us alone...). - But could a warped disc/rotor cause the juddering when turning the wheel?

After much googling, it seems that it can be a range of issues, tie rod end, worn bushes. But I am finding it hard to piece together the symptoms I'm having, with possible culprits. The accident also makes things harder.

Don't know if any of this makes any sense to someone. But my next stop is to a Volvo Main Dealer to see if they can sort it out. I'm just asking to see if I should be pointing the main dealers to specific causes, or let them take it for a spin. What I don't want is them wasting a day driving it around, and not finding much wrong, or costing me much pounds to trace and solve.

Thanks.

Hi,

My twin SU carb 1969 Amazon has no power below 2000 revs, sounds pretty rough at idle with plenty of popping. I've tried everything I can think of on the electrical side to no avail. Over 2000 revs the car runs reasonably well, although a little slow to pick up, maybe, I could be being over sensitive. Can anyone help me where to look next?

Full story

I had my B20B Amazon rolling road tuned at Aldon Automotive earlier this year. They did an excellent job and the car ran beautifully for, I guess, 2000 miles. Suddenly the car started to run badly. It was almost an overnight change. I initially thought I had a bad batch of fuel. Several tanks later (the car is going through fuel like there's no tomorrow) and it is no better.

I have tried:

Swapping the coil with a spare.

Swapping the entire distributor from an Aldon electronic ignition 077 to a points driven 026. By swapping I mean the whole unit, cap, rotor arm, the lot.

Testing the vacuum advance on both distributors by sucking through a new vacuum pipe. Both move freely.

Swapped the leads with spares.

Swapped the plugs with spares.

Timing is set to around 10 deg BTDC (rolling road test suggested 5 deg BTDC and I've tried that setting too, although the rough running makes it hard to judge) and there's no pinking.

It feels like ignition as carbs don't tend to go off all of a sudden, or so I'm told. Dual fuel filters are already in place and look pretty clean. I have not yet touched the carbs.

Any tips on where should I be looking from here very gratefully received.

Ed

Looking to add 4 bikes to my '05 XC90...

I have aero bars and no tow bar, however...

From reading the forums, tow bar seems the way to go (I have nothing else to tow) for various reasons such as economy, ease of use, height restrictions, security...

Forum questions on tow bars results in 9 out of ten saying westfalia from PF Jones, so that is sorted.

There is no consensus on bike racks though? Any recomendations for 4 large bikes? Ideally not too expensive as I am in for £300 for the tow bar already.

I bought the car in June last year and have done a lot of work in the year I have had it (well it feels like it anyway). I have attached a spreadsheet showing everything I have done – I think it covers everything but if I think of anything else, I will add it.

Key points
New MAF (gen Bosch)
Wheels refurbed
New drilled rotors, pads and shoes (400 miles)
New R mats
New drivers door switch pack
Boot CD changer installed (3 disc changer temperamental/infuriating)
Volvo twin outlet exhaust
Crystal lamp upgrades
XC70 grill with R badge
Dash covered in alcantara, interior trim wrapped in 3M (original is scratched)
Nokia bluetooth handsfree installed (mutes audio when calling)
New fog lamps (front)
Strut brace
New remote fob
4 new tyres

Loads more that I have forgotten about !

The bodywork is good for its age. There are no noticeable dents or scratches and it glows nicely in the sun under a recent cover of HD Wax !

The car is running brilliantly and the only issues I am aware of are:

1.	Small knock from somewhere when coming to a stop – only when the car is cold and disappears when it is warm/after a mile or two. It was like it when I got it and has got no worse since I have had it. I have had it checked over but the garage couldn’t identify where it was coming from.
2.	I had the prop removed as the center bearing was gone. The car is running in 2WD mode.
3.	Rattly boot trim – I have the repair kit from Volvo but never got around to it.

Car has 5 months tax and is MOTd until November.

Any questions, PM me.

Price : £2000.00, good home only please, all potential owners will be vetted :)

Thanks

Steve

Hi my 1.8 Gdi 2001 v40 was idling a bit low so after checking on here I removed the throttle body and cleaned it out. When I refitted it the car seemed to idle better around 800 but then rises to 12-1500 which it didn't do when it was coked up! The throttle flap moves freely and springs back both ways so its not sticking. It dosen't cut out nor did it cut out before I cleaned it but its worse than it was before. It seems to be sitting at 12-1500 more than it sits at 800. HELP!!!

Hi all
I have just bought a V50 2.0 SE Sport, and i have spent the last few days (in between rain showers) blitzing the exterior to the point where its pretty much immaculate, i am now about to turn my attention to the interior. Although tidy, its not quite showroom yet, but my problem is the center console knobs, in particular the radio knob. It seems to have some kind of coating that is peeling and looks tatty and wondered if they can be removed so i can clean them off properly? I didn't want to just try and pull them off in case it wasn't the way to do it, and don't want to cause any damage. Also, cant seem to work out how to change my signature?

Many thanks for any replies.

Hello folks, I am going to buy a V70 or an S60. I want the D5 with full leather, I tow abroad once a year and once a year in England (folding camper weighing 750kg). Can anyone tell when the DPF was introduced and do they still fit them or have they finished and when (please). Also tyres, my V40 wears it's tyres out in around 20000 miles, what would I be looking at with a V70 or S60 on midrange tyres i.e. Hancock etc or what tyres should I be using. I know michelins are about the best but they are a lot of money, as soon as I fit them my wife will kerb it and put the tracking out and wear them out down one side in 5 minutes (I don't mean to be sexist, she's done it before, and she will be driving the car as often as me). Do I buy a 2005ish model pre DPF (I think) with around 80,000 miles for around 5k or can I buy something for about 10k plus my V40 without a DPF.
I have searched the forums for info, and there is plenty, but I think I've gone into overload and can't remember anything any more, if anyone has what I want I may be interested but I still can't quite PM (6 or 7ish to go). Any links or assistance will be gratefully accepted.

Wondering if anyone else has spotted a simular problem or it it's just me?

I have the T-Tec/Textile off-black seats in my Feb 2010 SE 2.4 FWD Drive and the drivers seat has begun to split along the T-Tec patches along the sides of the base, under where your legs are. With 45K miles on the clock which isn't excessive for 9 months off 3Yrs use and when I never wear abrasive clothes (usally in a suit during the working week) and interior is cleaned regularly and btw I'm not particularly over weight either so I wouldn't put it down to me having a fat arse ;-)

This is the 1st non-leather interior vehicle I've had in a number of years, but I would have expected the fabrics used to have lasted along as the car?

Passenger seat is fine btw.

Should this be covered under warranty do you think?

Having read lots of threads I've got a bit confused on whether the grille from the current V50 (the nice new style) can be fitted to a V50 with the original grille (2004/2005 chrome grandad style)?

Can anyone confirm that the new grille can be used a straight swap on a 2005 model?

Thanks

Hi all

Am picking up my 'new' car tomorrow - well new to me that is - it's a 2008 v70 D5 SE Sport with steptronic box and a few other toys and 108 k miles. I know it is going to need the timing belt doing asap (i.e now!). I was planning on doing the aux belt as well (as well as tensioners etc) and probably the water pump whilst it's all out.

Question I have is 'genuine or parts or not' i.e timing belt kit is £121 from main agent (eurocarparts is £138 all in) or £75 full kit from local (large) motorfactors (Car Spares Sparkhill in Birmingha) who supply all of the surrounding garages and will do me 'trade'. The aux belt and water pump are priced with a similar differential.

Is there any such thing as a 'genuine' belt/kit as I suspect Volvo don't make their own? Or am I way off?

Would be really interested in people's thoughts on this. I'm going to keep the car for a while (still got my current 1999 V70 and it's still going like a trooper) and my heart is saying 'genuine' - but everything I've had from my local has been good.

Cheers all

Andy
