First good run after my blitz on suspension bushes etc, and almost everything is well - except for one noise. At anything above about 65 mph in top gear (auto) a repetitive knock turns up, which feels like it's coming from under the middle of the floor (I was sitting in the back and could feel it under my feet). It is brought on by accelerating, and/or by going over a bump, and/or by changing lanes ie steering a bit. Ease off on the gas and the knock goes away. Sometimes you can accelerate through it and over 70 it'll go away.

Most obvious culprit would be propshaft but I've found no play at all in the UJs, and the diff has been serviced recently without any improvement - and it's gradually getting worse.

I notice there's a bearing/support for the propshaft under the middle of the car. Could it be this?

Cheers.

Engine: T5/R - Boost Pressure Sensor? (ME7 1999 C70 T5)

I have been informed that 1999/ ME7 onwards cars have a Boost Pressure Sensor located in tubing between intercooler and throttle body (upto around 2002 model year or intercooler outlet on later models). Having smoked tested my system for boost leaks, checked and secured all hoses, fitted an uprated IPD recirc valve diaphragm kit and a new OEM actuator unit (actuator set up correctly - all work done professionally), the car is much better. the turbo seems to be wroking in the ranges it should, now starting to make the boost around 2,000rpm and holding it better but its still weaker than it should be.

The only part(s) this can now leave are the boost pressure sensor mentioned above which, I understand does have a high failure rate and has never been replaced and potentially a faulty Boost Control Solenoid that was fitted by Volvo dealers about 1 year ago. Having the Boost control Solenoid replaced, I would like to give it the benefit of the doubt to be working correctly before I go and purchase a new one.

Going back to the boost pressure sensor, which has never been replaced, can anyone tell me exactly how it works, what it does etc and I think I may order one from Rufe? (if anyone has an easy access to a picture or diagram to show exactly where this item is located and what it looks like I'd be very grateful)

Hi everyone,

Just looking for some advice, I've been reading some posts on here that have advised renewing the fuel pump after 120k, it got me thinking as my T4 has just gone past 125k, however I don't notice any hesitation while accelerating etc.:lightbulb:

I understand that you can get some power losses from a weak pump, but I was looking for some advice as to whether you can notice the effects of a weak pump or whether I will only notice a difference once the pump has been replaced?

I have to say that I am very pleased with it so far and if anyone is seriously considering going for a new one check out the savings to be had with a nearly new demo!! Cargo box and towbar next on the list of things to do, think I will just get the witter detachable and have a go at fitting myself.

Hi All

I had a message 'Power System Service Urgent' with battery lamp symbol showing every so often on my 2004 S40 2.0 diesel. Whe engine was turned off and restarted the warning would go away. Regardless I measured voltage when engine was off and it measured 12.4V. With engine started it measured flat 14.2V. The regulator or diodes or winding at fault God only knows.

Exchange alternator unit 150AMP Lucas brand from Eurocarparts was £167 but you have to hand over your faulty one.

The car voltage with new unit is 14.45V and car feels lot crisper and faster - I don't need even press the accelarator and she flies. No warning sign on dashboard gulp yet!!

Volvo or other garages charging £800+ for this when you can do it for only your time (2hrs max).

Car feels lot faster now too!!!!

The warning was intermittant on the dashboard and I have noticed car felt underpowered recently. I have thus taken the plunge and replaced the alternator. If you want to do the replacement its very easy all you need is a Haynes manual and well in the capability of a home meachanic.

To replace alternator:

First disconnect the battery leads.
Raise driver side off ground and put on stand and chock wheels with handbrake up. I always use jack as secondary support to be on the safe side.
Next remove plastic lid off engine.
Next remove protective shield under car please be careful and make sure car is supported very well.
Next remove serpentine belt by using ring spanner on tensioner to release tension making note of how it is fitted.
Next remove metalwork around fuel filter casing.
Next unscrew fuel filter casing and pull up casing with hoses still attached. You can leave in position if you wish and work under it.
Next remove small black cap off alternator and unbolt red lead.
Next remove connector from alternation which has small leads.
Next unbolt alternator bolts (4 bolts) with 16mm ring spanner and 16mm socket. Careful not to chew off any heads. You will have to access lower bolt from underneath
Next loosen allen key bracket at bottom of alternator whilst supporting alternator.
Unbolt allen key spacer off old alternator before handing over for exchange.
Remove alternator and replace with new one in reverse process.

Do not overtighten any bolts specially on the alternator otherwise you will breakage and headache!!!! You have been warned..........easy tiger!!

I hope this article gives hope to the beginner as you do not need to be an expert!!

Cheers

Hi

I fitted Volvo's 13 pin harness and TRM to my 2010 V70 but it seems to not work. Wondered if anyone could help....

With car runing, revere lights on, indicators etc., there is no voltage on any pins except permanent 12v (which I'm assuming is the wire connected to back of fuse block). Nothing seems to be coming from the TRM.

I know it needs software for full functionality, but having searched on here I understand the basic operation should work straight away.

So, question 1, can anyone confirm if it should do the basics without software on a 2010 v70?

Question 2 - I am testing voltage with a multimeter. Is the TRM clever enough to not supply any signals if there is no trailer attached - e.g. based on sensing current draw. I.e. will it spring to life if I plug a trailer in (I don't have one to try!)

Question 3 - have I got the right TRM? It came in a box (from FRF) with part no. 30744321, but the unit itself says 30716987. Also the "installation instruction" webpage shows the 30744321 to be for S60/S80/XC60 and don't mention the v70 for this TRM. However, I suspect they will all use the same TRM (it has the right plugs)

thanks for any help
Darren

Hi,

I have just aquired a 1991 440GL with carb and am getting smell of petrol in the car when driving along.

Is the fuel filter the black cylindrical "thing" in the fuel line located above the brake servo bolted to the bulkhead? This seems to have three lines going into it; one in underneath from the fuel pump, one out the top centre going to the carb and a third seeming to go back to the tank. Is this correct, does it act as a fuel return valve when the pump pressure gets too high? There seems to be some fuel coming out of the top connections but not sure where.

Are replacement ones avalable as the only things I have seen on the net have one line in and one line out?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Regards,

First thread on here so please go easy.
I replaced the top engine mount on my XC90 today and thought I would post the procedure.

Remove the engine cover.
Remove the through bolt on the mount (15mm socket for bolt head and 18mm socket for nut).
Attachment 24437

Remove the right hand side restraint as it makes it easier to remove the mount (17mm socket for the bolt head and 18mm socket for the nut) and swing it towards the front of the engine compartment (not too much as it is still restrained on the left hand side).
Attachment 24438

Remove 3 off studs (14mm socket) and 2 off studs (10mm socket) from the mount and lift the aluminium block out.
Attachment 24439
Attachment 24440

Here are the two mounts side by side. Hopefully the new one is a little bit sturdier.
Attachment 24441

Reverse the procedure when fitting the new block, the Volvo mechanic said that the studs holding the block down should be set to 50 Nm (36.8 ft/lbs).

Here is the new block in position.
Attachment 24442

Took no more than 30 mins to do.
The new mount cost £55 and the part number for mine is 30776354 (Engine Anchorage).

Hope this helps some of you who are unsure about tackling the basic jobs on your car.

Hello,

In middle of servicing car - got to the fuel filter part.

Its a 2004 D5 163 and has the plastic canister type filter with the papery insert thing you replace.

Haynes manual says to loosen the bleed screw on the bottom to drain the contents but the thing keeps on...well...bleeding!

Will it drain from the tank or should it only drain the contents of the canister at which point you then untwist the thing?

Obviously I don't want to take the canister off if its going to leak the contents of my tank onto the driveway.

Anyone that posts advice here will be a great help - need to pick the Mrs up from work in about 90 minutes and was hoping to get it all done!

Cheers

Afternoon all,

Can anyone tell me if I'm missing the obvious? Needing to replace front discs and pads on my 93 940SE estate. Single piston caliper, vented discs. Have removed wheel, lifted calipers out the way and removed spigot pin. Other than corrosion have I missed anything as I can't get the discs off? So far have tried heat, WD40 and violence! Currently applied WD40 past studs etc and left to soak.
Any tips appreciated as would like to get back on the road tomorrow.
Thanks, Simon

Hi Folks

As most of you know, I bought a Volvo S80 D5 (163bhp Euro 3) on a 2003 plate (face lifted model) about 3 weeks ago and it thankfully has a full AA warranty. Since buying it 3 weeks ago, I've experienced a couple of little faults and thought I'd post my finding up here just in case it could help someone else out that was having a problem with their S80, S60 or V70 with the D5 engine.

When I first saw the S80 for sale on a garage forecourt, I examined it and then asked the salesman for a test drive. Everything was fantastic apart from when driving below 30mph. I noticed a slight wave in power. Driving at a steady 25mph, it felt as if the power was being sent to the front wheels in a wave or a pulse - similar to when braking heavy and the ABS kicks in and does the famous pulse/cadence braking and you can feel a judder. Well same type of thing here except I was driving and not touching the break pedal. When driving above 30mph, however, everything was smooth and beautiful.

I told the garage I was interested in the car, but wouldn't touch it unless they were able to fix the fault. They agreed and a few days later they called me to say they'd found the fault - two sticky injectors and the intercooler was gone. These faults were fixed by replacing with genuine Volvo parts and I collected the car a few days later.

As soon as I drove it home on the first night, a warning message saying "High Emissions Service Required". I promptly took the car to Volvomax (My local independent Volvo garage) and Douggie there read the codes - the EGR Valve came back as being at fault and the print out said it was either in the "open" or "closed" position. Douggie reset the codes and cleared the memory. But 3 minutes later, on the way home, the same error message showed up on my dash. Also, a few days later, I noticed that whenever I was accelerating up a hill and the revs went above 3,000 rpm, the message "Engine service required" appeared on the dash and the engine went into Limp mode and switched the turbo off.

I took all this information back to the sales garage and they replaced the fuel filter, removed and cleaned the EGR valve and fitted a brand new genuine Volvo top mount as I'd noticed the one on the engine was knackered. For the first time since I bought the car, the Emissions message did not come on at all. All sorted and still going perfectly to this day. However, the problem of driving the car up a hill whilst accelerating is still there.

I took the car back to the sales garage this morning and their mechanic checked all the hoses, intercooler, electrics, etc and advised that we'd have to get the codes read. He tried his code reader, but for some reason it wouldn't read my car. but we did notice when it was up on the ramp that the front engine mount looked like it had started to perish.

I jumped in the car and drove a few miles to the nearest Volvo dealership - Volvo Motherwell. I sat in an amazing, modern, very stylish waiting room whilst drinking a free hot chocolate and reading the Herald as a gentleman by the name of "Harry" retrieved the fault codes from my car. After about 5 minutes he said the only code it's showing is 6805 (Boost pressure control faulty). He explained that the D5's engine mounts are actually pressurised and part of the vacuum system. Just last week, he'd had a S80 in with the same fault - accelerating up a hill, the engine would go into limp mode and replacing the front engine mount had cured it. Now, I know that an error code of 6805 could indicate a fault on a number of different engine parts, but at this point in time, the engine mount is getting the most attention. I think with the top mount being knackered for so long, the engine's taken some wear out of the front mount, well that's the theory anyways for the time being.

Massive respect to Harry for all his advice and knowledge of Volvos and for not charging me for the codes being read and the hot chocolate :D

I've only just came home and I'll call the sales garage on Monday to book it in with them to get the front engine mount replaced and hopefully from there, everything should be sorted. I'll keep this thread updated. ;)

So just to re-cap, after extensive searching through forums (VPCuk, VOC and T5D5), speaking to Volvo, Volvomax and the sales garage, if you have a Volvo D5 (163Bhp), weak points that cause a lot of hassle are the EGR Valve (Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve), intercoolers (At around 100k miles), injectors, fuel filters and engine mounts.

If you have the newer D5 engine with 185Bhp, you can also add the swirl pot (Swirl Chamber operating arm failure) and the DPF (Diesel particulate filter) to the list of things to look out for.

As a side note. I also noticed there wasn't an awful lot of air coming out of my dashboard vents when I bought the car - even with the blower fan on full speed. Turns out the pollen filter was blocked and looked like it hadn't been replaced in years. I removed and replaced it and everything is as it should be.

Also, when the air con on, the passenger side of the car was freezing as it should be, but the driver side was always no where near as cold. One quick trip to Kwik Fit, then confirmed the air con needed a re-charge and an hour later - the car's like an Eskimo's fridge at Christmas time :D
