Windscreen washers not working! Any suggestions
Lo there
I'm a virgin to Volvo's, just bought a 1.8 V40 a few weeks ago & love it. One problem I'm having though is that the windscreen washers don't work (the windscreen wipers do but the washers don't). Initially it was just the front one that didn't work, and I bought a service disk from Ebay (Mitchell Repair Disk) and followed the schematics which pointed me towards teh ECM (Electronic Controll Module). I've since had this checked out by an Electronics guy who said that he can't fault it! Since I put it back the back washer refuses to work now! I've checked out the washer motors and they're both OK, it's that they're not getting the 12V signal to dispense water. Has anyone got any idea's as I'm banging my head against a brick wall at the moment? Andy |

No, the fuse in question also controls the wipers. Thanks though.

Howdy, If the motor is spinning check for blockages in the pipes and nozzles, or loose pipes. if they dont spin check the wiring to the motors themselves. The wiring set up is quite primitive so if they aren't worn out and broken it'll be a wiring fault (loose connection clip off etc) or pipe problem.

Have blew the pipes out (windscreen wash doesn't taste vey nice!), and have checked for 12V at the plug which I'm not getting. According to my wiring diagram (which indicates the internal fuse board is on the passenger side making me strip near the whole bloody dash off before finding it on the drivers side!!!!) all that's left is the stalk (which works as the windscreen wipers work) and a relay in the CEM (Central Electronic Module). Been to a few scrap yards and can't find a CEM in any other S40's I've found (all of a similar year). The only other thing I'm thinking is that there's a sensor at the bottom of the water tank (empty sensor presumably) and maybe if this is faulty/upside down it may stop the washers working? That's my next step this weekend... Thanks for the reply. |
Empty windowleen bottle filled with screen wash, cops dont like you doing that though lol
Sorry i'll get my coat..... Dont know much abou these 40 series, wouldnt be a switch problem, although the wipers work, it may be a seperate control for the washers |
the sensor is just to let you know its running low and only thing it does is turn the light in the dash on.

There is a non return valve under the right hand rear boot pillar, disconnect below this, point pipe out of car and try rear wash again holding switch down for a few seconds to allow water to get there.if water comes out replace non return valve(@£1.50).also remove and clear out all the jets they very easily get blocked with sediment.
