Clutch Replacement

Well, the difficulty in engaging gears first thing in the morning has been diagnosed as a faulty clutch, and needs replacing.... price quoted from Volvo at over £700!!! I can't afford this much, so can anyone reccommend a garage in Cornwall/Plymouth that is a bit more realistically priced.
As I mention it, whats the best price anyone has been able to get a clutch reaplced for... mines a 2.0l petrol (2000).
Thanks guys :)

I bought my clutch from the local motorist discount shop for £160 (if I remember correctly) and my brother's mate fitted it for £100.

Luckily he works at a garage that specialises in clutch repairs and did it in his spare time:wac_wink:

Oh yeah, mine's a 1.9TD

I have sometimes have difficulty in selecting either 1st or reverse when engine running cold, so what I do is select gear before i start engine and (obviously) start with clutch disengaged (pressed). Works every time.

not sounding daft, are you sure its the clutch and its not the selector gate thingy? i had one on a car once that bent, dead easy to replace!

anyway, if it is the clutch i got a quote of my local motorfactors place for a new clutch at £160 and a recon at £70, i have been told that a garage should charge no more than 5 hours labour to fit it, may be worth getting your own clutch and fin ding a garage to fit it withing that time frame, or get a mate to do it for £100, wonder if hed do mine too!!!! hehehe!

Not being a mechanic, all I can go on is what they told me yesterday, and advised a new clutch... its got a rattle to it when clutch up in neutral which is apparently coming from the clutch. Volvo reckoned on 5hrs, but at their rate its £400 labour!
Best price I got so far is £480 all in, but am trying to get the garage who I bought the car off to pay for it... don't think these warranties they supply though cover a clutch though, but he's going to try... I just want to be prepared for the cost beforehand.

If it comes down to it, buy your own new or recon clutch kit then shop around your local back street garages getting the best quote possible, I'm pretty sure you will get the price down to a reasonable level. Failing that use the local phone directory to check out your local garages.

If it is the clutch why is it only apparent when cold, I would have thought if clutch is gone it's gone, don't matter if it hot or cold.

When its cold it is a real pain to get into any gear, but once warm it isn't really that noticeable.... one thing I have noticed is it will tick along in 1st or 2nd with clutch up and no accelerator @ 800rpm ish yet won't stall..... only thought that possible with my diesel. Apparently once its used a bit and warm it will be better. They've adjusted the cables to the best it'll be so I'll see how long it'll last.... could be a long time yet.
There is a rattle though when ticking over in neutral with the clutch up, but this goes once the clutch is pressed and apparently its coming from the clutch itself.

clutch replacement is 5.5hrs. i went with a volvo independent specialist and got the flywheel and slave cylinder also done for £800 (all genuine parts)
