Rumble wheel bearing sound help
 

So the pasty has had a rumble from the OSF since I got it. I've taken the wheel off today and opened up the caliper to see if I could spin the wheel,but really hard to check the bearing. Symptoms are once I get to 30mph it starts to rumble. Sharp turns do nothing it still sounds the same but when I apply gentle pressure to the brake it stops. In neutral it does it too. Down hill under load alsostill does it.once I take my foot off the brake it comes back. There is no feel of damaged discs through the brake pedal,where you would feel the pedal moving as I thought I would get.
What I have noticed is that side has a newish caliper in it. Could it have cooked the bearing as the pads look ruined from heat as does the disc.

Only had one wheel bearing go and it's quite distinctive. More of a low growl that rises in note with speed. Most likely wheel bearing, but check the flange around the disc, if that gets bent it can foul the disc with interesting results.

A bad caliper can cause excessive heat, which can cause other damage. Although, the symptoms you describe lead me more towards the wheel bearing. A bad caliper doesn't make a rumble noise, a bad wheel bearing does. Old tyres can also make wheel bearing sounds too... how old are the tyres? Any bulges on them?

If tyres are okay, you'll need to replace the discs, pads and wheel bearing. I don't think the caliper is the issue, but check it to be safe. Make sure the piston isn't seized (i.e. you'll have to push it back to be able to fit new pads in). If its seized, you won't be able to do that.

In all worn/noisy volvo wheel bearings I have come across the tone is always louder when the weight transfer is on that side... Are you sure it isn't tyres? This is becoming more common in recent years for some reason...

It's had a new caliper but I have to say discs and pads look shocking... May be it's the disc I've had volvos in past double Mike I have and never a issue. Only thing I can think is the bad caliper cooked the bearing.odd that when I rest my foot on the brake it stops which also points to disc

Maybe the disc isn't mounted properly, as in it isn't fully "flush" on the hub, so it wobbles when you drive.

It probably sounds like it wouldn't be possible, but it is.

So after a bearing replacement... Snapping the m14 bolts that hold the strut to the hub.. New ones coming, had some old spares to test drive it.
The old wheel bearing was rough but now it's still there at 40mph so tomorrow it's new discs and pads day. I cant be anything else

Possibly the Drive Shaft support bearing? Did you check that when the drive shaft was out?

Yes everything from driveshaft is fine no movement at all and spins with no roughness.
Just really strange how it's changed speed in which it starts.:confused_smile:

Soooo.maybe I've got to the issue. Had the car on a ramp and spun up the wheels,anyway all 4 turn... Bonus AWD works but thus is where now it all still goes dull. The sound was still there. Stop the OSR wheel it's still there, stop the NSR wheel and guess what it's still there 🤦*♂️ OK so we now know it's not a wheel bearing. Fronts are new so they are OK.
When near the rear of the car it can be heard when speed is over 30mph so rear diff possibly. Well I opened the side cover in the boot....fuse 23 has a jumper wire on the 7.5 fuse.
Pulled them both out at off for a drive, now totally silent nothing at all apart from road noise. So is it the haldex clutch that's causing the issue or is it the pinion bearing not having load on it so it's smoother.
