ETS Warning Light
 

I have recently purchased a V70, 2000, V reg, 65,000 miles with FSH, the ETS ligh comes on now and then, and the car runs 'lumpy' at speeds of 30/40 mph, but appears ok at the 55/60 level. I have read the other forums regarding this problem, does it look like I need a new unit, or is there anything else that might cure the problem. The light extingushes when the ignition is switched off, and the running is ok again, when re started.

Hi obvious question, have you had the fault codes read?

Not done that, I suppose it is the best place to start, it means a 200 mile round trip to my nearest main stealer though, it should be worth it to diagnose the fault.

Your car shows the early symptoms of throttle body failure.
Cleaning it may help in the short term.
Search this forum for a long thread on the subject.

Your car is OBDII compliant so any garage should have the equipment to read at least the generic OBDII codes which should give you a good indication of the problem and save you a long trip. You could also buy a cheap OBDDII code reader for the cost of taking it to a garage.

Yes, sounds like the ETM or electronic throttle module...do a search on it...

Mine did the same, you should get some money from volvo as yours has only done 65k

Lumpy idle, surging, ets light, all typical probs with the etm.

ETS light on my V70 began lighting about two weeks ago and presumed the worst - ETM on the way out. Spent £57 to have Volvo diagnose the clutch position sensor was faulty. That was Saturday.
Went home and took the sensor out (it's tucked right up under the footwell, linked to the top of clutch pedal). The sensor dismantles easily. It has two carbon variable resistance tracks with wipers. These were a bit gunkey, so cleaned with electrical contact cleaner and replaced. No light so far; my fingures are crossed.

Volve quoted around £100 to replace it (part plus half hour labour @ £100/hr!!).
