Transmission service required!!!!!!?
 

As I'm sure you are aware from other threads/topics I've rescently post 2 weeks ago I purchased a Y/01MY V70 T5 Auto as an interim car for the next six months as I thought it would be easy to sell on, fit the family bill and fit the performance bill:) and it does all of these things admirably:) But after only two weeks of ownership it hits me with 'TRANSMISSION SERVICE REQUIRED' in the Message Indicator Pannel along with the warning triangle being illuminated in orange and the emissions control symbol also being illuminated!

After a quick trip on Thursday @ 16:00hrs to my local mechanic for a chat about it and a quick look with his engine diagnostic tool nothing was resolved and I promissed to let him have the car for a day next week:)

Upon returning home I start searching for an answer to this message and for what may be involved with respect to a Transmission Service:) OMG is my first thoughts! Get the message/fault warning reset and flog the car ASAP!

But after some more delving into the net and this site I'm starting to wonder what my options are?! You see some appear to have success with replacing the autobox oil:) This sounds like a good option if it works as I've become quite attached to the car and would like very much to remain a Volvo owner for the next few years:) But if it needs a box then the thing will have to go either as a whole or in bits either way it dosent bother me so long as it returns my money:)

So my thoughts are to have a go @ replacing the oil and to reset the fault message!

Firstly I need to know if there is any new info on the box oil with regards the best place to buy the correct oil @ the best price and how much to buy?

And secondly if I bought one of these fault code readers would I be able to reset this fault message myself or would I still need to use a main stealer to do this?

Oh and how much would the main stealer charge me to reset the ECU and should I just get them to do it anyway in order to get their opinion of the fault?


The other symptom I have is that when you pull away from a standing start it kind of clunks into gear but then drives as smooth as a babies bum from then on with no other faults or creases in the vehicles locomotion to report:) Is this clunk indicative of another problem or is it part and parcel of the possible dirty/burnt oil problem that made the message come up in the first place? I have read about a problem with the B4 servo cover! Should I be replacing this @ the same time do you think?

1. Get the fault code(s) read from the gearbox, the PPC code reader will do this but I think you have missed the offer price in this, however even at £100 ish it will be cheaper than multiple trips to the dealer. Maybe someone local to you has one.

2. Look at the fluid, if not bright red change it, use Vauxhall ATF, part no 93160393.

3. Yes is would make sense to change the B4 servo cover at the same time.

4. Check the tightness of the bolts in the end of the front drive shaft, you can gain access by removing the small plastic hub caps.

Would I be able to reset the 'TRANSMISSION SERVICE REQUIRED' message from the MIP and the other associated warning lights with the previously on offer PPC code reader? Or will I still need to go to the main stealer to have this done?



I've just been down to have a look @ the fluid and although it appears to be @ the correct level:) It does appear the be discoulored and smells ever so faintly burnt/toasty:( Hope this is not very bad news:( Again on the plus side it is still very translucent:)

OK, I shall have a look @ these when it stops raining:) Should they be just done up tight or is there a preferred tightness? Does anyone have a photo that they could post to help me identify them prior to my exploration?



Just another couple of points to raise;

1. How much oil will I need to buy? My box is the AW55-50SN:)

2. Can't remember the other point:( My brain has gone:) It's me age you see:) I must be ready for Volvo ownership then;)

hi steve, ive got a code reader from nordic, and looking at where you live, im only in colchester, if you want me to come down and do a scan, i dont mind atall, cost to you is a cup of tea, two sugers. you can then post up the fault codes on here. thanks rob.:thumbs_up:

Wow Rob! This would be great:) But hows about this? My little bro lives in Colchester up by Tesco and I need to pop in to see him some time on Monday:) I could fit this in around a time that I could drop by yours with say a bag of doughnuts or a bowl of fruit whichever you prefer:) saving you the trip over to Witham:) Hows this sound? I would love to see one of these PPC readers in action before buying one besides being able to see what fault codes are up. I'll PM you my mobile number if this suits you Sir:)

Box holds 7.5 ltrs but buy 12 to be safe, you may be able to negotiate a price on this much so may not in the end cost much more.

I think the driceshaft bolts are scretch ones and one of the 'fixes' is to fit XC90 ones, do a search I'm sure the answers are on the site somewhere.
