Engine Idle and Vibration
Hi, this is my first time posting on this forum and my first time owning a Volvo. I have an 02 V40 DS and was wondering whether anyone could tell me how to adjust the idel of the car. It seems low as the whole car shakes. Surely it should be around 950rpm instead of 750 rpm?
I have also nopticed that the whole car shakes - is this normal? I addition the steering wheeel seems to shake/vibrate and it is not the tyres as they are new......I read a thread that mentioned engine mounts could cause this Thanks much |
Engine mounts can cause it. But 750rpm is about norm. my workmates s40 idles at this. As for shaking wheels if tyres are new how careful were they when they balanced them? Or did they balance them?

P.S I am afraid you wont be able to adjust the idle. not without professional help, gone are the old idle screws.

I would have thought 800 - 850 was normalish, not conversant with your engine, but might be worth changing fuel/air filters if not done recently.750 does seem a little low.
cheers baz |
750 is correct for the D5 IIRC. Mine shakes and vibrates when idling in neutral too. The other two 163 D5s I've driven were the same. The newer 185 D5 in the new S80 was much smoother at idle, but seemed gruffer at motorway cruising speeds.
Some you win... |
The D5 idles at 750 rpm, when at idle and not moving the engine does tend to vibrate and rattle more than normal,Recently a Volvo tech has informed me that one or two of the injectors due to emmisions shut down when car not in motion,Engine may feel as though its misfiring. That is what I believe he told me but as always ready to to be corrected.

Interesting about the injectors shutting down, not heard of that before.
It's quite nice with the auto, because if you leave it in D then it doesn't vibrate hardly at all - but does blind the poor guy behind with the brake lights! |

Err yes of course ..
standards are slipping you see a queue of cars at the lights , everyone has the stop lights on . Has the highway code changed or something? Someone hits you up the back , or a car backfires and shocks you , your foot comes off the brake and you hit the car in front ,, Handbrakes ... |
