Ive got no drive!

No, not me, Ive got enough to be getting by on..

The 960 has no drive..

History:

A few weeks ago she went into limp home mode. flashy E S W and the light on the dash.

That reset itself (although it still carries the fault as I never cleared it off the system..)

Has been running fine since, no glitches or anything.

Got in it a while ago, selected reverse, nudged it back a bit, selected forward and drove off at sub 20mph speeds. got about 100 yds round a corner on our estate, went to accelerate and absolutely nothing. no drive at all. car revs fine. just as though i were in a manual car and pressed the clutch in. The lever will move thru all gears ok and for all intents and purposes feels fine in it's movement. Checked the fluid levels, theyre fine.

Ideas?

Just going out to go swear at it for a while.

Right. Have investigated a bit more. The car will not start unless in P or N. Moving between these positions does nothing. no small nudge as the car moves into gear or anything like that.

I am assuming the torque convertor has gone?

hi mate, is there an auto box ECU on the 9 series like the 850's use ?
possibly a ECU meltdown or connecter from ECU to gearbox come unplugged.

maybe selector cable/linkage wear/damage.

i believe the start inhibit switch is under the selector lever and not linked to the ECU, that would explain why that function is still operating.

Hmm I shall investigate further.. I believe it has it's own ECU.
Im leaning towards the torque convertor due to the way it just went 'there and then'
I will look into the ECU side of life though. Checked the OBD, not got any more codes bar the one it was carrying.

If it is the T/C, then there'll be a decent 960 up for grabs on ebay... in need of new T/C... Im really not going to bother with the faffaround of breaking the box off the car and swapping stuff. Not got the equipment or time nowadays to start playing with 'box strips.. 10 yrs ago I would have relished the challenge, now? Naah. Gave up spannering for a living.

maybe a shame you sold the 700 :(

740Estate Aug 22nd, 2006 19:56

Yup! I thought that at the time..:hissyfit:

Further investigation reveals it does have a Transmission Control Module. I'll grab that out tomorrow and check connections, etc.

Couldn't be a broken half-shaft could it ? You didn't mention any noise, but stranger things have happened.

740Estate Aug 23rd, 2006 00:12

No, it's definately not a halfshaft.. unfortunately!!

960 drive loss.

Extremely unlikely to be either torque converter failure, and half shaft breakage even less so. Start inhibitor is on the drivers side of the g/box tucked behind the exhaust d/pipe & a g/box cooler pipe. The cable runs over the top of the box to the passenger side, tiewrapped as it goes. On that side you will find 3 multiplugs clipped to the side of the box and covered in crap. Unhook and clean, you might get lucky. The inhibitor switch also sends a signal to the g/box ECU to say that you have selected drive, so your problem may still be there. Changing the inhib switch is a right pain even with the vehicle up on a ramp. I wouldnt even attempt it on the floor. You also need a special tool to align it tho' can been done by trial and error. A visit to you friendly Volvo dealer beckons

I am still clinging to the hope it involves the inhibitor switch, hence my mention of it before in my first post.
I had assumed that it did send a signal to the tcm/ecu and that it's previous 'standard' playing up session was a sign of problems starting with it.. I'd foreseen more flashing light sessions and lights on the dash, but it's possible that it has decided to really go for it this time and manifest itself as something more severe. The little tinker...

Ive no excessive noise from the torque convertor when the gearbox is in gear when the engine is running, so in my eyes it's still pointing to the TCM or the inhibitor switch... although the way it has appeared it might, or does lead you to feel it's the T/C gone to pot.. :angry2:

I'll accost the car tomorrow, have a check of the TCM and the Inhibitor switch as best I can with it on the deck.
