Finally got round to doing this today and thought I'd confirm what I originally needed for future searches:
You can replace both the rear shock top mount and the rear shock without having to remove or compress the spring.
It's actually quite a straight-forward job. VADIS mentions using a cargo strap to hold the suspension pre-load but doing it the way described in the Haynes manual using a troller jack to take the load off the shock works just fine.
