Did you resolve this?
I've not seen a Volvo driving the tacho from the Alternator but its not uncommon on older diesel vehicles in general.
The alternator brushes will not be the issue but where an entire alternator has been changed on a car with bad brushes - and that alternator has a pickup to drive the tacho - obviously, this can cause the tacho to start working again.
