Its a Garmin 1340 Europe one I was thinking of. Very similar to the Tom Tom in use (well to me anyway!) that I got yesterday, although with the free updates for life.

What I liked about the Tom Tom is the 'smaller' and integrated suction pad which I am going to see if it fits upside down (as the Tom tom 'rights' itself) just on the 'sensus' shelf in the car. The older Tom Tom suction pads were dire and kept falling off the window, although this one is a twist dial and much better.

Did you get the 1340? My trusty Streetpilot i3 died last week after 8yrs of service. I was toying with the idea of getting a TomTom as they seem to be so popular but the Garmin 1340 looks great value and I am comfortable with the Garmin set up. There are so many different models that it gets hugely confusing but this seems to offer a decent package.

Incidentally I have used one of the satnav mats that you can get from Amazon/other online/Halfords etc for a few years and they are great. They genuinely do not move on the dashboard and it means that when you arrive at your destination you can simply put the mat & satnav in the glove compartment with no visible marks left for would be thiefs. It is much better than sticking the device to a windscreen.
