my v70, 2001, is showing message, "engine management system needs service", this is not the regular message saying serving is due, which goes out after 100 yards or so, but totally different
had DIM replaced because of problems. still with the message. was then told fault in brake pedal sensor. after querying this, i have now been told no, it is the clutch pedal sensor, and that there is a brake fluid leak from the master cylinder. there is no sign of a leak, the fluid level has not gone down for as long as i can remember. i have not topped it up. but i still have the message which was not solved by replacing the DIM. and garage, volvo dealer, wants to replace master cylinder and clutch sensor at cost of £370+, (their latest suggestion ) has anyone any suggestions, ideas, please |

To avoid, as much as you can avoid, being hit by dealers who replace random components at your expense and make money out of their inability to diagnose the problem, why not buy yourself a VIDA/DICE diagnostics kit cheaply on ebay. This diagnostic aid is the Volvo system that main dealers use. You need a laptop capable of running Windows 7, either as the operating system or as a virtual OS. Even if you had to buy an old ebay laptop to run the diagnostics, the total cost would be around£130, maybe less. You could then plug it into your car and it would tell you all the faults logged in all the ECUs. Really today cars, and Volvos as much as any, are computers on wheels that can diagnose their own faults and without a means of reading the logged faults, you are left with the seat of the pants 1950's diagnostic approach to cars which today are hugely more complex and where faults can lie in electronics and not be visible to the old style mechanic's approach.

You'll find folk with addition help in the section that covers your model: http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=19
As suggested, VIDA will allow you to read the fault codes and get a better idea of what is going on. Alternatively, ask the Volvo garage who have done the diagnosis for a print out of the fault codes. This is an example of the what VIDA can tell is is wrong: |
