i have come across some ex police cars that for some strange reason are taxed as light goods vehicles. However at that age it would cost £123.50 for 6 months tax not £126.
Perhaps the ebay advert is wrong, it would not be the first. Did it show a photo of the tax disc?

Unhappy high tax rate v70

hi kenny thanks for the reply
I asked the question on ebay just to see if it was has high as mine.( if thats what you mean) .And when i bought mine off ebay i never questioned it which i am sorry now .I cant afford the tax it to much and i cant see anyone in the right mind wanting to pay it so .I will probably break the car .The reasons i think its is down to emissions or year or something and i am REALLY P***ED OFF i do like the car i fitted a 6 six speed box bescause it was broke. You live and learn and iwill check from now on regards ron

Ring DVLA and tell them that the tax class is wrong, it may be easier to change than you think.

It may be that it was registered initially as light goods as a VAT clawback via whichever Force first registered it - would have been based on their transportation needs as well as fuelling costs...similar problems has been found with V70s originally registered as ambulances or hearses - re-designation of a vehicle is not usually a problem, but you may have to pay a VAT tariff based on its age at your purchase or its re-designation if the original registration was as a LGV without VAT or VAT was claimed back by the original purchaser....bit of a grey area, but usually sorted easily with help from DVLA

Its because police spec vehicles are not 'type approved' by manufacturers ie they are generally not 'off the shelf' cars and hence they do not undergo emissions compliance testing at manf stage unlike 'normal' cars. Hence the only VEL bracket the DVLA can put them in is PLG.
Also as police vehicles are/were tax exempt ( althought they still displayed the disc they were 'free').
