steering wheel shudder query
Morning All,
The steering wheel shudder on my 94 T5 estate has now got sufficiently bad that I really must do something about it ... I get the shudder through the steering wheel at moderate braking loads - its fine when braking lightly - and when it starts shuddering, it can be made to stop by applying more pressure (moderately high pressure - sufficient for rapid braking from high speed) . The shudder can feel quite severe when braking moderately hard at speed. Yesterday I checked the wheel bearings and track rod ends - all ok. Didn't get a chance to mechanically check wishbone/subframe bushes etc but visually they're not perished or otherwise distressed. My discs look worn but if warped I would have expected to feel it all speeds ? (While I was under there I did spot the broken rear exhaust hanger - one jubilee clip later and one less rattle !) Any thoughts and advice gratefully received ... Many thanks Dr D PS commiserations alun8 - I've been fretting about my cam belt recently - your story will get me ordering a new cam belt on Monday morning ! you might be lucky and get away with a few new valves ... I have a friend with a porsche whose belt broke at idle and it suffered no internal damage - it can happen ! |

RE: steering wheel shudder query
This can happen if the discs are warped or the wheel bolts have not been torqued up evenly to 100Nm.
Did you manage to fix the tailgate Lock? |

RE: steering wheel shudder query
Chris,
Thanks for your comments - I was going to change the discs anyway so I guess I'll find out if that cures it. I've just checked out Don's site - the two/£199 discs + Kevlar pads should do the job (?) I guess the 94 model has the smaller 280mm discs ? Re wheel bolt torque - it's interesting to note that the shudder has become unbearably more noticable since returning from the garage for 2 new wheels (to replace those stolen by some local lowlife vermin recently ... )the garage swapped one of the new rears for a front and so would have refitted the bolts (and they fitted locking wheel bolts all round!). From my experience garages seem incapable of properly torquing a wheel bolt - they all seem to hammer the bolts in with a power tool and THEN "check" the torque setting with a torque-wrench - doh ! At least minimum torque is reached but would hinder disc movement if required. Re: tailgate lock - no, not yet. I've printed off Chris Roger's most helpful feedback but as the wife has to drive to Wales tomorrow the handling issues have taken priority this weekend! Many thanks Dr D |

Hello again Chris,
You must know that most helpful chap Chris Rogers who has the forbidden knowledge of the dark arts of electrickery ... (I'll read the name next time before diving into a reply ....) I've just checked out Europarts - they have ATE discs for around £20 ! are these any good ? why so cheap ? shome mishtake shurely ? Dr D |

RE: steering wheel shudder query
Dr D,
No Mistake, That is the correct price for the Europarts discs. I had the dreaded brake wobble when I got my 850 estate and was told about the wheel nuts not being torqued down properly will cause disc warp. So I looked around at changing them. I toyed with the idea of putting grooved +/or drilled discs on at about £ 180.00. In the end I got a set of the ATE dics and pads from Euro for about £ 80.00 all in. Apparently, ATE is the original spec fitted by Volvo. I couldn't justify to myself spending twice as much to fit discs that may look very nice, but do the same job as a cheaper set. After fitting them, torquing the nuts down to 110nm and running in for 250 miles, no more brake wobble. ( Touch wood.) Hope this helps. Marcel |

RE: steering wheel shudder query
Personally I would loosen all the wheel bolts and retorque before I repaced the discs unless you have another reason to change them.
I don't know about the ATE disks but the calipers on my car are made by ATE so it's a good chance the discs are too. My experience has been with the rear brakes, I fitted the ATE pads from Europarts, they work better than the Volvo pads they replaced and don't squeel. My car did have the shims fitted though. |

RE: steering wheel shudder query
Hi Dr D
will you keep us posted how you get on as I have the same problem, interestingly I go to a local tyre specialist, who torque the nuts with a torque wrench and also align the tyre with the valve, on a new tyre there is a small white dot or similar which should be positioned correctly, just thought I'd lets you all know!!
