Default Mirror glass replacement

Hello everyone,

I would like to know how can I replace the exterior mirror glass without replacing the entire mirror (if it is possible) and also without damaging the glass or mirror

I read in the Haynes manual that some 3 teeth must be visible through that small opening in the lower part of the mirror but haven't seen them although I moved the glass in all directions many times

Thx

Just did this yesterday on mine! You need to GENTLY lever up the lower part of the mirror. There is a yellowish plastic ring with three teeth on it. This is a lock ring that holds the mirror in place. You need to give this a nudge with a flat blade screw driver to release it. If none of this makes any sense let me know and I'll take a photo of all the bits.

Cheers

Scott

After checking up mine - 1986 and the donor one 1992 (very careful) I found out that both have the glass attached to the mirror (inside of it) with the help of 8 plastic clamps and 4 guiding pins!
So, to avoid breaking them I will replace the entire mirror.
The "teeth" thing is for pre 1986 models for sure
To be remembered and added to the lack of info in the Haynes manual (not the only one)!!!

Actually did this replacement on my '91 Estate recently. There is a slot on the bottom center of the mirror housing. If you look inside you will see the edge of the gear that holds the mirror in place. You do have to tip the top of the mirror in to see this. With a flat screwdriver you can now slide the guide to get the mirror to release. You may have to gently pry the mirror out. Just make sure that you have released it. I did notice that on a '92 Estate I have for parts the mirror did attach differently, but after inspection I realized that was because they were heated mirrors.

I've had a chance to take a few pics so hopefully these will help! Push the mirror assembly away from the car to give better access. GENTLY prise the bottom of the mirror away from the housing. The photo that I have attached is a bit blurry but you should see the 'teeth.' These need to be pushed away from the car to release the mirror.
The other photos show the motor behind the mirror. Look for the four fittings this is what the mirror and back plate locate on to. Once the new mirror and back plate are positioned on the motor the ring with the teeth are pushed back towards the car to lock it.
Looking at the pics of the backplate the ring is 'locked' when it is parallel / in line with the backing plate.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Scott
