I rang a Volvo agent and they said £25/£30 to search the Volvo archive and recode it. I e mailed Simon (frfvolvoparts@gmail.com) and within a couple of hours he e mailed back with the code. Now I can drive round blasting out ZZ Top and Glenn Miller....er...not at the same time. So thank Volvo owners forum you've made me a happy Volvo owner.

(I still want a Dodge Viper!)
Sounds like you spoke to a right knobber as most people report back that their dealers just handed over the code without any money trading places

Oh no!!! I changed the solenoid and valve assembly, £131-00 plus £60-00 old unit surcharge, started it up and the rattle is still there. I unplug the unit and it goes quiet plug it back in and it clatters away. It's a sort of cyclic rattle though the engine runs very smoothly. Lift the revs and the engine sounds great but let it idle at around 750 RPM and it clatters away. I unplugged the sensor on the back end of the intake cam shaft and that takes away some of the noise. The noise is definatley somewhere round the intake cam.

Occasionally when you are accelerating gently the engine hits 2000 RPM and suddenly the feels as though it has a burst of power! Could the two be connected?

I hate modern cars!! SU carbs and contact breakers....lovely. This modern crap......wah!

It's almost always the VVT pulley/sprocket that's at fault. Unplugging the solenoid just stops the oil pressure shifting around from one part of the pulley to an other part of the pulley inside it !

I would suggest checking the wiring from the solenoid trace it back as far as you can and check for brakes in it as you have replaced the vvt pulley and solenoid that would be my best bet or when was the oil last changed a very slim possibility

Looks like another trip to the local Volvo dealers. Talk about rip off parts prices. Eurocar parts don't stock the VVT pulley or the valve only the timing belt and tensioner.

I'm afraid this car is suffering from the crap servicing it had in the past. I bought it from my B-I-L estate when he died. It had a glove box full of receipts for repairs and servicing from an independent Volvo garage. He was not a mechanically minded guy so what they said he believed. I have found bills for hundreds of pounds for jobs that have never been done. Now I'm paying hundreds to put them right. I change the oil every 3000 miles along with the filter but I think I'm too late to put the neglect right!!

Just got my VVT pulley from RFR with the C03 discount, made it cheaper than getting one from Ebay.

I ought to post this in the joke section.

I went to my local Volvo dealers. Handed over £198-18 and came away with a brand new VVT pulley in a nice blue Volvo box. Drove to the workshop to change it. Pulled up outside, got out opened the roller shutter door, walked back to the car and realised the rattle had stopped. I revved it up a few times and the engine barely made a sound. I left it running for 10 minutes and still no rattle. Is this the answer. Spend nearly £200, chuck the part on the passenger seat and the problem is cured. I've just an advert for Shell petrol out of a magazine and thrown that on the passenger seat. I'll keep you posted on what happens.

Reminds me of a joke. Car stalls on the side of the road. Engineer, accountant and computer technician step out to investigate. Engineer says, appears to me to be battery-related. They promptly verify connections, check voltage...all good. The accountant says, maybe we ran out of gas so they get back in the car, turn ignition on and the needle goes back up to 3/4 full - plenty of gas. Car still doesnt turn start. So the computer technician says, maybe we should turn the ignition off, open the doors, get out, and then get back in and re-start...

Make sure you don't move the magazine or the spare parts!!! The car needs to know that you are still threatening to replace!!!
