Hi - sorry for the late reply.

The camera will have a video cable with a phono plug on the end, plus a pair of power wires.

I suggest (given CAN and other vehicle issues) that you should run the camera power to ignition switched 12v supply. That also means you can view the rear camera when going forward too.

As for running wires, you can run them up the door following the existing wiring, and through the rubber to the body of the car.

From there, I just brought the cables behind the trim along the nearisde of the car - some places you feed it behind (like at the wheel wells) and others (like door reveals) you can probably just tuck the cables under - without removing them.

Its an easy job..just take your time and plan the route... should take no more than 15mins to do a tidy job routing the cables.

Hope that helps.

Well, after nearly two years, the reverse camera died.

I decided to go with the camera I originally was going to use as a replacement - intended for a BMW X5.

This does not use the number plate lamp as a home - it sits neatly on the "shelf" next to the tailgate handle/light moulding.

I dont know if anyone else had any issues with the old camera at MOT time - it was pointed out to me that the number plate bulbs should be of the same colour temperature - which meant I fitted LEDs to the other one too. This camera obviously lets you retain the standard volvo number plate lights.

The only small issue, and its not really an issue, is that it mounts over to one side, so the picture is not a central as the original camera.... no biggie, and it still lets you see the towbar when hitching up!

In the first post you mention PAL 50 and 60. You'd be fairly hard pressed or unlucky to get a PAL 60 camera unless it was specifically designed for South America. PAL cameras advertised on eBay especially, will more than likely be PAL 50 if they're advertised as PAL. It's still worth checking though.

A lot more cameras that you think are pal 60... I appreciate the difference and know they should not be but quite a few of the cheapo chinese cameras are.

Its hard enough to get ebay (non UK) sellers to send a you a PAL camera in the first place, no matter how many times you confirm it with them.

I had one seller send me FOUR NTSC cameras before he finally sent me a PAL one!

Hi David,

I also own a pre-2006 xc90, so my situation is similar to yours regarding the shape of the number plate light. I wanted to ask you about the last one you installed, the one that sits on the "tailgate shelf". Could you post the link on ebay? Also, I assume you had to drill holes this time. Is that correct? Thanks!

Hi, what I did was remove the mounting bolt that holds the complete plastic housing with the light bulbs, boot handle etc.. Then I drilled this out to the size of the camera and used the camera as the replacment mount. Hope that makes sense, Will try and get a pic later

Hi

Sorry I did not reply earlier, I had missed this one!

This is the one I bought...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CCD-REAR-V...E:L:OC:GB:3160

Just make sure the seller sends you a PAL one as the first one he sent was NTSC, even after me mailing him AND adding a not to that effect at checkout.

The camera came with a drill bit - which from memory is about 22mm or thereabouts.

Did anyone consider a wireless solution from the backup camera to the front display / LCD? I read the Volvo instructions for installing the Backup Camera and it is very lengthy to wire the cables from the rear to the front of the car.

Being honest, I would not do it... just run a cable.

It is really not that difficult or time consuming to run the cable from rear to front.

The tricky bit as in any vehicle is getting the cable from tailgate into the vehicle body as the small "rubber" tube that protects the cables at the "flex" at the hinges is often a challenge.

The other thing, some "cheaper" cameras wont last forever being permanently powered - especially IR LEDS . Being wireless they would be, as opposed to being powered only when being viewed.
