Default Another ATF question sorry.

I have contacted a couple of garages for a transmission flush on my xc90. Both have come back with we don't offer a flush for the xc90 because it may cause damage but they will do a sump dump. I have no transmission issues at the moment but want to change as it's at 121k and been used for towing.
Copy of a reply. Good Morning
We dont offer flushing on the gearbox service it would be a drain of the old fluid and refill with new. Providing you dont have any issues with the gearbox as a gearbox oil change can often make things worse if there is an underlying fault, if you would like to book drop me back an email with some dates you have in mind and I can get you booked in.
Your advice would be appreciated.

I have performed the Gibbons method on the AW55 before, which involved attaching a tube to the oil cooler and draining fluid through the torque converter and then refilling. I would be more inclined to do a dump and fill to be honest, as I am not sure if the above method caused issues for me with gear slipping and whining.

Dump and fill is probably the easiest and safest way of changing the gearbox oil, however it can take several dump and fills to replace the majority of the oil so if you are paying a garage to do this they may well only do 1 dump and fill and most likely charge repeatedly for any subsequent dump and fills.

There are tons of guides scattered on these forums and online / YouTube on how to do this yourself. It is fairly easy to do and would save you some money and also ensure you get most of the old oil replaced with new and fresh oil.

I had mine done last year by a very good ex Volvo mech down in Clacton on Sea Essex.

He really knows his stuff...I had to supply 20ltrs of Auto Box fluid and he flushes it through on a proper machine that he has till it comes out nice and Pink. He even sends photos of it being done. He then resets the Level at a certain Temp, resets the Counters etc all using VIDA.
My auto box was fine before i had it done....But it did make a marked improvement.
So, they can be Flushed through...Maybe they haven't got the right machine.

DB.

Exactly this. Has there ever been a documented case of 'things getting worse'? That seems to me to be the euphemism for 'I haven't got the right kit to do that for you, sorry'. For the record, these machines change the ATF, they don't flush - flush implies pressure.

OP, one of these:

I'm actually not sure if flushing works - the car needs to be driven as the fluid is being changed to make sure the fluid in the differential housing is also changed. Hence I think 3-4 sump dumps and refill with 10+ miles between is best.

Our indy puts it up on a lift and cycles the gears whilst engine is running and the machine is doing its magic

Not sure if Horton cars is near you but this guy seems to know his stuff. A lot of info on the auto boxes on his website and have a look at this video with regards gearbox servicing.

Yes Graham does, he did mine for me just as I described and earlier linked in the video so I know it works on an XC70 well north of 100k miles with only good results

Not offensively expensive either. And his loaners are famous in their own right too

I'd be curious to see the condition of the fluid before going down the full flush route... If your friction packs are worn then the filthy fluid is probably what's keeping the box together
