Looking to buy s80
Hi all,
Looking to buy an S80, not fused if it's petrol or diesel, but it has to be auto. I searched for a buying guide but could not find one, if there is one can you point me in the right direction? Otherwise, any pointers and what to look for would be appreciated. Mileage is relative, but is there a mark that makes this car a no buy? Any specific area of the car I should be looking at when viewing? My budget is around 4k. Thanks in advance. Ved

I think your budget is a bit on the low side to get a decent 2006 onwards S80. This might have fitted the bill: http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=261139 No idea what age it was, & it had a very short MOT but otherwise sounded good.

Agreed £4k is on the low end but is doable. Mileage wise like everything it depends, there is no hard and fast guide on what fails when but I found mine (and many others also found from looking at my for sale post) that quite a bit tends to go awry at around 150k but if you spend through it they will keep going. I chose not to spend through it with my car sadly.
You'll want a diesel when you see all auto petrol models you're likely to come across are £515 per year to tax. Rear trailing arm bushes go, common issue, power steering issues aren't unknown and the D5 models need to have the correct latest spec aux belt tensioner fitted as they can fail taking the cambelt with it and killing the engine. Cambelt change time is 10 years or 108,000 miles and aux belts every 5 years or 54,000 miles and they are fussy about it so don't go over!! Otherwise they are lovely, good luck finding one!
