Default Tyre noise

I just traded in my 2014 V40 D2 CC Geartronic with 16" wheels for a 2016 D2 CC Pro with 17" wheels and we notice that there is a lot more road noise with the 17" wheels.

I had switched the original 16" Continetal tyres for Goodyear Ultragrip 9 ones and they were much quieter.

The Ultragrip 9 is not made in a 17" size though so I am wondering what other people fit. I'm hoping it won't be nesseccary to fit 16" rims although that would let me fit Ultragrip 9s again. (assuming they do the 225 width) The 17" summer Continental Contact Sport 5 also slip and slide about on the icy roads whereas you can drive pretty normally on the Ultragrip 9s.

My D4 has 17" Bridgestone Potenza's.
Road noise is not a issue but grip in wet greasy winter conditions is poor, the car will try to wheel spin in 3rd under acceleration.

My next set of tyres will definitely be all season tyres - probably Goodyear vector 4 seasons but no doubt these will be noisier.

My philosophy is that I wouldn't wear flip-flops all winter, so I make sure my car is properly shod. I do around 30-40k per year, and the tyres are the only thing keeping me safe (apart from breaks) on the road. Every year, when the temperature starts to drop below 7 degrees, I fit winter tyres. There is a difference in grip and (lack of) road noise.

Summer tyres under-perform in low temperature conditions. You only have to look at the tread patterns closely to see why winter tyres perform, they have a different pattern and are covered in sipes to allow the tyre to move more freely and grip the road or snow.

Try Goodyear Ultragrip 8.

The reviews say that the Vector 4 seasons are particularly good for lack of cabin noise. They came top of about 6 comparative all season tyre reviews multi tests for overall performance.

Have had Goodyear Vector 4 Season Gen2 fitted the car aligned and the car is so much better. Lot quieter and steering lighter and much improved.

Have to say the car was so far out of alignment after 5 months that I think it must have been out from the factory. It was the furthest out the garage have seen at the front.

Hasn't been kerbed. That was the first thing I suggested but the specialist thought it was too far out to be anything other than wrong from the factory.

Apparently they align brand new Vauxhalls as part the PDI check for a local main dealer and they are always out from the factory.

Used Nokian WR A3 on previous car, not loud, good on wet road and climbed icy/snowy mountain and didn't expect that 5 years old tires will perform so well. Now have hakkapeliita 8 studded and it is hell if not driven in snow/ice.

Do you really ned studded tyres in the South of Sweden, 'MalmoV40'? I would have thought - as you appear to suggest - that decent winter, or even 'aret rund', tyres would be sufficient.
