Unhappy "Reduced performance" message in info centre

Just been in the car with my B/F (2001 S60 2.0T SE) and it started running really sluggish, displaying "reduced performance" in the info centre. The orange warning triangle lit up on the dashbaord, together with the emissions systems warning light (the little engine symbol!) and two more messages then appeared in the info centre: "engine system service required" & "engine system service urgent". We managed to limp about 3/4 of a mile to a layby and decided to give up. Had it recovered to the nearest Volvo dealer and they're going to stick it on the diagnostic system tomorrow. Anyone any ideas what it might be, all sounds like ££££££££££££!

Could possibly be an ETM fault, mine went like this recently and was due in to Volvo 2 days later for the ETM clean. This was done but also needed a new Throttle pedal as this was faulty apparently,£160 for the pedal and £20 at my mechanic to have the codes read.
Do a search on here for ETM as there are a number of threads running and a list of affected cars.

Ben.

The emissions light is up on mine and it wont start, cant find a reason why but im beginning to suspect that my ETM might be bust although i didnt get the reduced performance message. From what i have read i would take a guess that your ETM has packed up

Hope you get it sorted

regards
Graham

Just an update on this one (it's my car that Mellie was describing).

Dealer ran a diagnostic today and they said it "threw up some ETM faults".

They've done the software updates and cleaned the throttle housing (all the freebie stuff suggested by Volvo UK) and tell me that after two road tests it's looking OK.

Judging by the other posts on here about this fix, I have no confidence in going any great distance in the car now and will just wait for the ETM to fail completely. I'll get the dealer to quote for a new one when I collect the car tomorrow, ask Volvo UK what they'll 'contribute' and then get it booked in so that I can actually use it with some confidence.

at least Volvo UK contibutes towards the repair and replacement. somehow in South Africa we are sub-human and safety issues are our own problem. I paid for a cleaning, the software, the coffee in the waiting room, etc.

"Volvo for life" takes on a whole new meaning. Down here it starts to feel like a life sentence rather than emotive allegiance.

I'd consider court action if i didn't know my court file would hit a stack a mile high of consisting of 2000 murders a year, 30,000 rapes, break-in's, car jackings... I'm starting to sound like a guy in need of counselling. I'll stop now.

cheers,

Notam

Thought you could only pursue court action if you bought from a dealer. Bought mine from a dealer operating from home in June 2005....not much chance of success I don't suppose. All I can do is keep receipts and hope Volvo UK eventually cough up!
