It possibly may be that the seller knew of the problem but it doesn't necessarily make it expensive to fix.

Need to be methodical -
Check for charging voltage when engine is running - needs to be 14v and some. Be careful as an alternator on the way out may work some of the time but not reliably. Also check the alternator is cold an hr or so after stopping - if failing rectifiers are drawing a parasitic current that might keep the alternator warm until the battery is flat.

Check for parasitic drain - wait 10 mins after engine is fully off and measure current draw, it could just be a sticking switch leaving a bulb turned on overnight. Needs to be 0.05 amps or less (rule of thumb, xc90 could be a bit more or less).

Once you know the engine is charging the battery and nothing is discharging it overnight, start thinking about CEM and/or immobiliser issues and reading the codes must be the first step.

If you can localise the problem a bit you may get more useful responses from the forum.

Low battery voltage slowly kills CEM in these cars. New battery will not solve a problem as I mention before.
Having immo issues a message would come up on the dash screen.
There is option in vida to check live data of the CEM like immo, engine crank etc.
I cant remember now but if I am not wrong CEM live data shows "starting initiated" when you turn a key to crank the engine. If no crank - it 99% CEM problem. Random start are typical symptoms for these cars when CEM starts failing.
To solve a problem you need new CEM and software upload by dealer - this costs mega money.
Alternatively a donor CEM and transfer all data from original one by a person who has special knowledge and equipment. Donor and original CEM numbers must match

We will be able to provide volvo CEM cloning service (Norwich) in the future but at the moment we have no tool available for full data transfer. At the moment we can transfer data from older volvo CEM units.
I had the same starting issue with my xc90 before. In the end it was so bad I had constant problems every day while was trying to start a car. We cloned CEM and solved starting issue but because data wasnt transferred in full and donor CEM numbers didnt match I had other problems

I see there's specialists that can repair CEM? How do I find out if it is the CEM fault?

So I picked up the battery from Volvo dealers. was £101 plus V.A.T. But as warehouse forgot to send the item the parts department gave me a whopping 20% discount so it was £96 including VAT.

I noticed old battery showing low battery sign so swapped it over with new one today.

Let's see how this goes

So I drove the car today (new battery in place), dropped kids off in the morning, parked the car for 5 mins for this, then went shopping, parked for another 20 mins, then return home. 4hrs later I went to start the car to pick up the kids but engine wont start. No Low battery signs so looks like other issues at play here?

I just realised that on 15th June I replaced the worn leather gator on the auto-gear stick. It was very tight when I put the car in park. At first I couldn't take my key out as it wasnt sitting in park properly. Then I adjusted the leather a little.. it's still a bit tight but goes into park and I can get my key out easily. This was the first night I saw the problem.

A garage said it could be the inhibitor. I then remembered how the mitsubishi colt didn't start or crank when I left it in gear instead of neutral.

What confuses me is to why it will start first go next day.

Can someone shed some light?
