Hi,
Any fault codes? Get them read JIC What does the gearbox oil/fluid look like? Clean/pinkish or dirty/burnt? Is the level Ok? Depending on the above a change/flush of the gearbox may be appropriate... Des. . .

Error codes can be read by plugging a diagnostic error code reader into your car. Volvo can do this for you or most decent independant garages that have code readers.

as Des said get the codes read asap. 'Tranmission service required' message means a fault logged in the gearbox ecu. until that message is erased/checked the gearbox will be in 'limp home' mode. Gear changes will be all over the place
