2....depends on YOU...around 30mpg average. 3....Wouldn't worry about that on a 14 year old car. 4....Yes...but still depends on you..and how it's maintained. Welcome and good luck. Neil

2. Depends, but our 2.5 10v auto will comfortably do better than 30 mpg average. 3. Make sure that everything works properly. If it's a post 1999 car it may have the ETM, but generally speaking these are very very fine cars, and a good one is someting to hold on to. 4. Properly maintained these cars are supremely reliable, yes. Cheers Jack |

As it happens, I was very carefully monitoring my fuel consumption over the past few days. My car usually runs on LPG, but that system has a fault just now, so I have been using petrol exclusively.
My 2.5 non-turbo 10v V70 auto, which is arguably less fuel-efficient than the equivalent S70 manual transmission saloon, has returned 36 miles per UK gallon. This is a 1997 car and has exactly the same type of engine and transmission as the 1998 S70 that we also own. My V70 now has covered over 270,000 miles and so the engine is probably not as efficient now as a car with a lower mileage, but it has been very well looked after, with regular oil changes and servicing. 36mpg in UK gallons is 30mpg in US gallons. I've been making several long trips (which is why I was able to monitor the consumption), and have been driving using the cruise control at a steady 60/65 mph for several hundred miles of motorway (freeway) driving. Driven steadily, these big Volvos are remarkably economical cars. However, we also find that using the S70 around town the fuel consumption drops to 25 to 28 mpg UK, which is 20 to 24 mpg US.
