I had a vibration and found the cause to be a bolt through the subframe was touching the lump of metal you mention. I took the bolt out and cut 5 mm of it and vibe was gone. turbo d

I'm in Sheffield now and then for work...let me know if you need me to drop by....you could try the car with my rims and tyres on and see if problem persists...that would at least clear that up...

That's generous offer, thank you.

Checked all my wheels again for damage today - nothing obvious. The tyres look OK also. Maybe worth just discounting them though.

I did make a start of checking the subframe out but ran out of time, i'll carry on with that tomorrow. The subframe does look have been removed at some point as there is a clear mark where it once sat - but doesn't seem loose. At 160k though it may have been off for a clutch at somepoint?

As much as i love the car, it's really starting to put me off driving the thing. 100 mile return commute for work is a real drag when the whole car shakes horribly at anything over 50! Had it in two garages and neither can find a fault, although all 4 tyres are feathered/roughed up on the outer edges and both garages admitted that something, somewhere, is a-miss.

Rack looks to be original, cannot see any movement in it when using a pry bar. Where is the vibration damper located please?

you really need to measure them properly for run-out at the rim: inside and outside edges

If the steering rack and subframe fasteners are tight could be worth a look at the subframe bushes. You've replaced so much the old adage about patching old cloth with new comes to mind.

Yes, the Ship of theseus has been mentioned once or twice before. Luckily i bought the car stupidly cheap as i bought it as a non runner to fix up. All the parts replaced so far were in need of replacing anyway, it's just whatever is making the car shake that's spoiling the car now.

Ok so i stuck my head under the car to look at that subframe damper, and it's missing?? Is this something that only came on the D5, or should the T5 have it also?

Just checked out the drive shafts in a last ditch attempt to find the vibration before handing it to a garage. As it happens, i have around 3mm of play where the left hand inner cv slots into the gearbox.

Do the splines wear on these things, or is it likely that i'm getting the engine hoist out to replace a bearing in the 'box?
