Funnily enough when my rear disks were changed the dealer rang to tell me that the discs no more than "500 miles" left in them - so some places do check them!

The "money pit" is a description for a car, no more than 3 years old, with a "full service history" - yeah right. I did get it cheap but didn't expect to spend half what I'd saved putting it right. However, after spending the thick end of 2k, it is at last, behaving as it should do. The only area about which I have doubts is the air conditioning which seems to be totally ignored in the service schedule so I now need to find a local, competant, auto air conditioning place to ask some questions (and if the bl**dy cat doesn't stop trying to bite my fingers as I type this she'll be having a flying lesson!).

Told that sig fits gnhuk, that's like me! 6 yrs old, bought a bit cheap, FVSH apart from the most recent service only few k ago (I believe the service book though as all volvo stamps and I've spoken to the garage who did the last service) and seems to be costing all the money I saved up to sort it out. Perhaps then I should persist with my car... I'm glad yours seems to be ok now. I haven't reached 2k yet but I presume you are paying garages to do it all? In that case by the time I'm all done I'll prob. be at the equivalent of £2k+ if I'd paid for all the labour as well. But even without all that, parts are so expensive these days.

Anyway - back to the original topic: if any 'experts' have any more ideas about my brake problems, or think I have made correct assumptions, please let me know!

Thanks,
Pete

Exclamation Another update

Got new rear discs today, planned to fit after work but only got one done thanks to heavy rain + grim weather meant it quickly got dark. No I am not going to drive car like that, it's currently not being used. Put it all back together though, well minus the 'pointless' disc retaining screw which predictably had seized and needed drilling out. I had to put it all back "on the road" just to move it a few feet as I realised it was slightly blocking next doors garage where I'd done it (the garages are all next to each other in a block and not much room in front of each one). DOH! What a pain that was!

Have decided o/s/r caliper is now FUBAR because it really, really struggled to compress right back in when making room for new disc (I had to use a piston compress tool with a long lever on the T bar!) even though all went back together ok the other day. So maybe this is the (only?!) problem after all and the braking exertion over the weekend knackered it for good. Anyway I am now going to buy this caliper...

... so here comes tonight's question:

Does anyone know what is the difference between the "early" (up to 2000) and "late" (2000 onwards) rear calipers for S/V40? PFVO stock only the early one. Volvo VADIS lists two part numbers.

But EuroCarParts who do replacement recon calipers list only ONE possible caliper with NO indication of model years!

Does anyone know, will this one fit? Was there no real difference as far as volvo are concerned?

It would be good for some advice since I expect Mr. Eurocarparts won't know either way and I don't want to get one that looks all ok but then ends up being a duffer in operation.

Thanks,
Pete

Thanks Rooster and thanks for quick reply....

... do you know if it is possible to transfer the spring from new style one to old style one and hence make it the same as the new one?

That might of course be a stupid question if I'd actually seen both of them, as they may look completely different for all I know!

Or it might be how eurocarparts only seem to do one part, coz you just use the spring off your old one if you've got a 2000 onwards vehicle.

Cheers,
Pete

They look same altho not sure if there is a cut out for springs on early types, better looking for later types to be 100% i think

Thumbs up

Yeah your prob right, better safe than sorry especially if something comes via mail order then it isn't right and I have the hassle of trying to send it back.

I've just sent a mail to Nordic to see if they do one + price, will grill eurocarparts about there's tomorrow.

I think it's a safe bet that anywhere will be cheaper than volvo main dealer... anyway I'm fed up going in the dealer I'm in there prob every week for bits, they all know me now I think I'm their best customer at the moment

I am not a happy bunny, I want that rear caliper by the weekend as I'm fed up not being able to use my volvo and I could not source it that soon from anywhere except the main dealer, £150 exchange to you Sir OUCH!

So thanks volvo for changing the caliper because if you'd kept it the same as the earlier ones then it would have cost me half that!

By the way if you know of somewhere I could get the caliper that I need cheaper THEN DO NOT TELL ME I DO NOT WANT TO KNOW YOU WILL ONLY INCREASE MY MISERY!!!!!

Not happy
