You need the towing module. Can you get it from the person who sold you the wiring. You can get them second hand on eBay etc.

Can you get the module by itself on eBay? The person that sold me it must have just cut it out of the car it was in without realising he could have just unplugged it!

Yes you can but you may already have one in the car. Look behind the trim in the rear LH corner of the cargo space. It may be held by Velcro on the back side of the plate in front of the fuse holder.

I presume this is what you mean?

https://flic.kr/p/VHG7DK

It has two small plugs coming into it from the bottom. If I follow the wiring will it lead the the 'plug-and-play' socket?

That is the park assist module.

What exactly does this do? I fitted the towbar wiring in my V70 by splicing into the existing loom.
About to buy (hopefully) an XC90 with 7 pin socket and need to upgrade to 13 pin. Is this relay box required, or just a "nicety"?

If your prospective new car already has a towbar and electrics, all you will need is a 7 to 13 adaptor like one of these

Cheers

Dave

PS To answer your question - the Volvo wiring kit (with trailer module) makes the whole job easy and can cost the same or less than some aftermarket gear that has to be spliced in.

Thanks Dave.
Unfortunately the prospective car only has 7 pins wired up and I need all 13.
I managed to find a wiring diagram which I must have gotten hold of when I did my current one. On reading it I found the XC90 is the same as the V70, so I'm sorted. I even found some spare relays I got at the time!
Just need a 13 pin socket and some cable.....oh: and the car!
