Default Future S60 owner?

Hello everyone

I've always liked the s60 and had a little search on auto trader to see what the prices were like...I came across a nice 2.0T and wondered how much it would be on my insurance (only 20 years old). To my surprise its only £50 more a month than what i pay for a 98 1.8 s40 and they are cheaper than the 2.0T s40s!

I had a few questions, hoping that some of you own a 2.0T.

How is the performance side of the car? Being quite young I am into my speed (don't judge ) is it quite nippy or is it like a tank?

Also are there any common problems that occur on this car?

Your help would be much appreciated!

Thanks

glad to see i am not the only 20 yr old volvo driver haha, there are comman issues but a well maintained one avoids most of these and if you spend time sourcing a good one you wont be disappointed compared to the s40. am sure others will be able to give you more detail

Hi,

I decided to seek out a petrol S60 after taking a real liking to my diesel one, apart from the engine. I really wanted a 2.5t or a T5, but there are very few about, in fact I think the 2.0t was all they sold in the last year or so, hence I made do.

Performance is not bad... it definitely lacks the grin-inducing punch in the back that my old Saab 9-3 2.0T (same bhp, lighter car) gave when you got to about 30-40mph in second gear but it can still manage a pretty impressive surge of acceleration as long as you don't mind red-lining it. And it does so with considerable refinement, your passengers won't really notice.

What I find most impressive of all is the flexibility at low revs. It will pull cleanly and smoothly from sub 1000 rpm in higher gears in the most unlikely of circumstances and gradients.

Incidentally, check the road tax liabilities to avoid surprises, especially if it's an auto. I think the marginally increased emissions of the autos may possibly tip them over the threshold into mega-tax bands....

Yeah, its not a rocket ship but its not exactly slow. Its ferocious on fuel if you even look at the throttle.

Im 26 and wife is 24 and we pay £700 for our 2.0T S with 3 years NCD, 6k a year, garaged in a good part of town. We couldnt afford to insure an SE. They wanted £1600+ and the only.difference between the 2 I could see was interior trim. So we held out for a spec'd up S model. Only thing it doesn't have is the car phone and is half the price to insure? Go figure!!

Tax was £154 for 6 months.

All suspension components seem to wear out quickly along with tyres. Probably standard Volvo stuff but... Being good with spanners helps. Ive had mine 3 months and its been in my garage every week having something replaced!

Performance?

I recently drove from cairnryan ferry port to the M6 which is probably just over 100 miles. The road (A75) is a mix of dual carriageway and single road.
Setting off from the ferry port you need to stay ahead of the traffic to avoid becoming blocked in.
I wasn't overtaken once! I had a BMW 3 series and a range rover behind me all the way and they were unable to pass. In fact they gave up trying to after a few miles and just followed my manoeuvres on overtakes. That was not thrashing the car but just good progressive driving.
When we reached the M6 they took off and I trundled on at 70mph lol. The driver of the Beemer gave me a wave as he passed.
There is plenty of torque for overtakes and the ride is superb.
I have had mine for 9 years (2003 T) and love it. Only now thinking of changing it for the XC60 as I have been so impressed with the car.
Hope that helps.
