Hi All,

New to volvo's, but just took the plunge and bought a 440 si. It had been lying for a while and aint in perfect nick, but has a years MOT and looks pretty good for a '95.

managed to pick up a mint half leather interior already, so thats the first job, but theres a couple of small problems which I'd appreciate any advice on - if they're known issues with the 440

1. creaking noise from the from suspension n drivers side. appears to be intermittant as about 50% of the time I cant hear anything

2. erratic idle when braking - if I brake coming up to a junction then dip the clutch, the revs climb to about 2k, drop right down then return to normal?

Cheers

Talking Welcome

Welcome Bigstu! Hope you find the forum useful. You will find many helpful & friendly folk here.

Not sure about the creaking noise, may be as simple as in need of loosening a retaining bolt and then re-tighten to the correct torque setting like they should do on a service. Sorry can't be any moe specific.

With the idle, very often the idle-valve is to blame. These can be cleaned up, if you search the older threads I'm sure you will find instructions on how to do that.
If that does not solve it, you may have the start of an air leak somewhere. You can check for that with a can of spray carb' cleaner. With the engine running spray around the intake pipes, injectors, and manifold. See if the engine note changes when you spray in a specific area. A tad awkward in your case as at present it sounds like you need to be on the move from your description. However, if it is an air leak, no doubt it will eventually cause an erratic idle when stationary.
Good Luck & let us know how you get on.

Hi Bigstu,

Welcome to the forum.

Check the link: http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...spension+creak

I think Kevvy was suggesting using the search feature within each forum - you'll find that most problems have been covered in earlier threads which saves posting a question and waiting for forum members to reply. It also keeps the administrators happy as, I imagine, they are in a constant battle to save server space.

I have just sent my 1995 440SI to the scrappy after a couple of years of faithful and enjoyable service from the old girl. I hope you have the same good experience with yours.

Regards

Hobbly.

I have a sneaky feeling all of this could be put down to an excessively corroded subframe and as such the car should be taken off the road. Perhaps even taken back to the garage you bought it from. *wink wink*
