Default New to this board...with a question

Hey all!

Great forum here, I searched for a couple of days to find a good one. Can't own an older auto without such a resource!

I am working on a trade of an 87 Jeep Cherokee for an 89 740 Station Wagon, Turbo/Intercooler red, black leather interior, great shape but for a few little things I can get at the wreckers...got the jeep for free, so figure the Volvo HAS to be worth what I am paying for it!

The one issue that isn't obvious is that the windshield wiper will not turn off. Start the car, they are on. I live in Washington State USA, so this is correct most of the time, it is rather embarrasing the couple of days of the year when it is not raining. My guess is that it is the relay, but I haven't a clue where it is located. Any help would be appreciated!!

Hi,

Does the car have the headlamp wash/wipe system fitted?
My bet it does!
If so disconnect the headlamp wiper motor on the drivers side (the one nearest the washer reservoir). and then try your ignition.
Could always be the other, mind, but it's usually the one nearest that reservoir.

There is a fix for this issue to repair the wiper motor. Details:
Linky....
While this covers the 850's it should also be useful for you. Or you get a new motor and then try to refurbish the fitted one..

Ohh yes.. Welcome to the forums and enjoy your time here..

'89 US models have the quad rectangular headlights and therefore can't have headlight washers.

Do you by any chance have a loose control stalk? This causes all sorts of problems with the wipers. My intermittent setting is a bit more intermittent than it supposed to be, only working about 60% of the time. Fixing it, as far as I can tell, involves removing the steering wheel and tightening the screws behind it.

Ahhh...
If it is a loose connection for the stalk itself then the two torx screws can be tightened up (carefully) by using a torx bit and a clamp. You don't need to remove the steering wheel..
You will need to take the plastic surround off - 2 x torx screws..
May also be worth checking the cable connection as well. While you are there.

MTerry, you are correct, quad headlights...I am picking it up Sunday, can't wait to start working on her! My buddy is a great guy, but hard on cars, she deserves a little TLC.

Funny thing, when he was buying this car, he had to work, so had me go with his wife to meet the seller and evaluate the car. I even drove it home for them. Sweet car! Nice having the turbo there when you want to pass, the looks on people's faces when she scoots past them in a pass is great. I have a Mitsubishi Eclipse (97) I put an aftermarket turbo kit in, and the volvo is nearly as fun...in a straight line

Checked the control stalk, nice and tight. Pull the fuse, the wipers, of course stop. Pull the plug on the back of the control stalk, they stop. Couldn't find a relay, none in fact ?!?! Figure it must be the brushes/wipers in the wiper motor.

Next question then is how do the wiper arms come off without damaging them? I take it the motor is under the cowl plate that the wiper arms come through...

TIA!

Hi,

If the 700's are anything like the 900's then yes, that front panel in front of the windscreen is held in place by a few screws if I remember.
Tread carefully and don't force the panel if it sticks, check for additional holders/retainers..

Lift up the plastic cover at the spindle and undo the nut.

I helps to put the arm/blade in the upright position and then back to help you slide that bit of plastic..
The nut is a 10mm one.
Once off you may, again need to put the arm/blade in the upright position and "wiggle" to help remove the complete unit off the spindle..
