Also, if you have no voltage to the headlamp it's worth checking that you have power in & out of the CEM. I have heard of instances where the conectors on the CEM plug were dirty/bent/slack resulting in no supply even though the relay was new.

I have tried two new bulbs and neither worked. I will have to get a multimeter so I can see if there is any voltage at the plug for the headlight.

Ma70, you said that I can check the power going in and out of the CEM....How do I go about doing this? I inspected the plugs and harnesses on the CEM and they all seemed fine. Can I test that with a multimeter?

I haven't personally done it myself, but I believe you can get in to backprobe the multiplugs at the CEM yes. There was a wiring diagram showing the relevant pins somewhere on this thread... I'll try & find the post and quote it

I *think* this should be what I'm thinking of, hopefully be able to see which wires are which along with the photos further up this page showing the pin numbers as you look at the CEM

I'm late to this party (woo!) but essentially you should get 12V current across the 2 contacts, WITH and WITHOUT the bulb and headlight switches all on. If you get roughly 12V with the bulb out, and 0V with the bulb in, the relay is faulty.

If you get 0V with and without the bulb, it's either a wiring problem or CEM not chucking anything out regardless of the relay.

(I think that's right anyway, it's somewhere further up the thread, Gatos posted it)

I'm new to the Volvo forum and have been following the CEM thread.
The O/S headlight on my 1999 Volvo S40 T4 is not working; I have checked the wiring and voltages and that all appears fine.
The CEM fitted at the moment is a 30859700.
Can I fit a 30896698 as an alternative?
Do any members have either available for sale?

Yes, the 30896698 is 100% compatible.

Found a Volvo V40 being scrapped at a local yard and got a 3085970 CEM which is now fitted and all lights now working.
The new CEM has had the DRL function turned off so I must select the lights manually.
Should I be able to switch on the parking/side lights with the ignition switch in position I (Intermediate/radio position), at the moment they can only be turned on when the ignition switch is in position II or when the engine is running.

Method for enabling/disabling DRLs is explained in the manual. You can probably find it on here if you are clever with your searching....

Dipped headlights only work in pos II and main beam only work with the engine running (I think?) but the sidelights should work even with the ignition off completely and the car locked - as long as you switch the headlamp control to the sidelight position (45°)

Don't leave it in that position because it'll drain your battery.
