There are many factors which cause poor starting so I would be approaching this a little more methodically.

If you use data correctly, you can be well towards identifying the problem before even lifting the bonnet.

So I've had a service, which was due anyway, and I requested the fuel filter was changed as well. Seemingly this was the cause of the problem or at least for now!!

If the fuel filter change doesnt help look forward to clean inlet manifold. Anti shudder flap may be sticking since you said EGR was filthy.

So I'm back...the problem has come back again. Annoyingly...I guess I am going to strip the EGR again and see what that looks like. Then maybe the inlet manifold.

Blank the EGR to see if the issue goes away.

You can get planking plates for the EGR’s on V50, it’ll stop it venting exhaust gases into the induction system. The blanking plate slots in between the EGR and the silver pipe that runs along the back of the engine between the EGR and the inlet manifold. I blanked mine off and it stopped the black smoking under acceleration and I had a small improvement in MPG. I was having some mid-starts which was the result of my EGR being stuck open, I blanked it off and the problem went away.
