This was a quote I got today from a Volvo dealer for the job of "rear trailing arm bushings replacement Volvo XC60"

I have had these reported as worn but not needing replaced imminently at the last two annual services and so have declined to have them done. What is the labour charge? I believe the bushes have to be replaced as part of a complete new arm but that is not an expensive part as far as I remember from researching it. I think the wear is premature at 3 years when this was first reported on mine. What do others think and would it be covered by a Volvo warranty?

They wanted to charge me £600 at my dealers last year for the set on my S60, but I talked them down to fitting them for £500. Haggle you can't lose, if they wont go to an independent and get them done

Thumbs up

I would get a second opinion on if they really need changing at all, I had a recall for something else on a 11 plate xc60 and while it was up on the ramp the Volvo guy showed me the rear trailing arm bushes and said they needed replacing asap then quoted £400+ I left it a couple of months seemed fine so when it was due for next mot and service at an indy I asked them to have a look and get them done, when I picked up the car I was told that although the casing on the bushes looked rusty it in no way affected the integrity of them and there was no reason to change them at all, that was 20'000 miles and nearly a year ago and"touch wood"no problems. Wouldn't hurt to make sure, hope this helps

Second opinion makes sense on such an expensive job. One Volvo dealer told me I needed new brake pads and discs at a cost of over £300. Another (whom I know from friends are more respected!) serviced it & said the fine for another set of pads!
Some mechanics are better, more experienced and sometimes perhaps more honest than others....

I was once "done" by a Fiat dealer who insisted Mrs D's Panda Cross front and rear discs were "pitted" and needed replacing. £500 if I recall, on a two year old car ! It only happened once. Now, the day before the MOT I run it up and down the Harthope Pass to polish the rust off the discs (it's wet and windy up here). Now it sails through the MOT - using the local garage. Without this "treatment" a garage determined to extract cash could attempt to replace the discs at every service.

I posted this several months ago as I was annoyed at the thought that I was being taken for a ride
Well, I went for my service today and there was no mention of my rear arm trailing bushes needed changing or indeed I didn't even get it discussed as something I may need to consider in the not too distant future
Just goes to show that my comments about this dealer were justified and how poor their service is.

Had that on my V50. Local Volvo dealer said the front discs and pads needed replacing at the 37.5k service. They were fine and I ran them until 72k although pads should probably have been done around 70k

It's a money making exercise by some unscrupulous dealers and relies on the lack of technical knowledge that many owners have
