Default TF-80SC AWD faulty

I have an issue with the TF-80SC on my 2008 V70 T6. The problem is intermittent (probably once every couple of weeks) and appears random. On driving off from overnight cold the box hunts for gearchanges, slips and generally misbehaves. After a couple of miles I stop and switch off. The engine fans cut in and there is a smell of hot oil. After about 4-5 minutes I start up and drive off - the car and gearbox operate faultlessly for the rest of the day and for several days thereafter.

The fault occurs in all modes - D, Sport and manual selection.

I changed the fluid (Gibbons method) about 50,000 miles ago and then drained/refilled (probably a 50% partial change) about 10,000 miles ago, both with JWS 3309 spec fluid; there are no leaks and the level is correct.

I suspect the cause is not the fluid because it is so random and intermittent.

Does anyone have any suggestions please?

TIA
