Default Advice on 2005 S40 se key

Hi,

My wife has recently aquired a 2005 s40 2.0 SE it only came with one key :-(

I am looking at a replacement spare and have seen some on ebay for sale for around £40 I realise I will need to get this programmed at Volvo once we receive it but can someone explain the following :-

The key has a metal bit that you can slide out of the fob itself and once removed the fob will work and the car will still start,

1/ What is the purpose of the metal key bit ?

2/ I am sure I saw somewhere that there is a plastic key that you can use to start the car as long as the original is in the car is this correct and where can I get one from ?

Any advice on the s40 plastic key system will be much appreciated !!

Thanks,

Simon

Hi Simon,

Pleas do not waste your money on purchasing a key from ebay - there is nowhere that can re-program the key so that it is paired to your car, not even a Volvo dealer will do this for you. The only option you have if you want a new key is to purchase a new one from a Volvo Dealer. They are not cheap either.

For your point 1 above the removable key can lock the glovebox. If you go somewhere with valet parking then you can lock your glovebox (with anything that may in there) and take the removable key with you. The car can then be opened locked and started with the main part but nothing no access to glovebox.

Point 2, i've no idea about that - not heard or read anything about a plastic key - unless your on about the keyless entry system vehicles?

any key you buy on e bay will unlikely have the code numbers with it unless it is brand new and still volvo wrapped , Therefore it will be useless to anyone .
There are 6 different keys depending on chassis number and whether keyless or not too .

A new key from volvo is about £65 + £12 for the coding software and about 20 minutes labour .

the metal key is quite vital to open the drivers door with when the battery goes flat or remote doesnt work !

Ad 2:

That is the keyless start knob.

Will only work, if you have keyless entry...

Thanks guys great fast responses , the car does not require a key in the door to enter the car so I assume that's what keyless entry is :-)

Oh looks like I gotta go to Volvo then :-((((

She will not be happy lol

Thanks

No, keyless entry means you don't have to touch the key to enter. If you have to press unlock, you have the standard "fob" or "remote". That is all.

The door lock in the driver's side is where the little metal stick is to be put aswell. If the battery is dead (either key or car) you can still get into the car.

So why do some dealers quote £200 upwards for a key?

The extra amount is for the 20 minutes labour at the stealers. Thinking about it, where's the 'labour' in programming a key?

You have to get up off your chair in the break room, walk into the service office, scratch your b*lls, pick up the key, walk to the car, get into it, drive it into the shop, wire it up to the computer, press a few buttons, burp and scratch your b*lls again, drink your coffee, uncouple the computer, park the car outside, walk back in, hand the key over to the service office and walk back into the break room...

Of course, that isn't all spot on, but that would be it
