Confused on Engine Variants
Hi,
avid reader, but still a newbie - so sorry for long winded questions. I'm looking to cash + PX in a V50 2.0D Powershift for an XC60. In my budget, it's looking like a 2009 model (say 30k on clock) - would love a D5, but may not be able to afford it. SO, have been reading about all engine variants (including FWD and AWD) and looking to see what would be next best. I must say I'm pretty confused, even after reading lots of posts. I'm trying to work out what variant matches each other and for what year to get some idea of what a good engine is. So far, I'm at this stage (am I completely confused!!) 2009 2.4D AWD (163hp) (2 x turbo) 2.4D FWD (175hp) (1 x turbo) 2009-2011 D3 FWD (163hp) (1 x turbo) D5 AWD (163hp) (2 x turbo) D5 AWD (185hp) (2 x turbo) D5 AWD (205hp) (2 x turbo) 2011-2012 D4 FWD (163hp) - latest 2.0L (1 x turbo) D4 AWD (163hp) - latest 2.4L (2 x turbo) D5 AWD (215hp) - latest 2.4L (2 x turbo) Ultimately, most of the cars I've seen that fall into my price range seem to be "2.4D SE 5DR GEARTRONIC". I presume these are the 175hp variant and are just FWD. If this is correct, then is it going to feel comparable to my 2.0D V50 Powershift - I'm hoping this FWD XC60 handles well and is still quite pokey, if I can't get a D5. The engine aspect that concerns me, is that an XC60 on a single turbo won't have the push for the safe overtaking in that 70-80mph range. I'm not a speed merchant, but do want the comfort of the push when you need it to get out of trouble. Any advice, much appreciated - volvo have changed their nomenclature so much, it's baffling!! Thanks |

Just to throw a spanner in the works...
I have a 2012MY XC60 D3 AWD 2.4ltr 163 bhp 5-cylinder manual with AWD, single turbo. Had no issues with the performance, bearing in mind it is a big car. Never feels slow as bags of torque. I did test drive a D5, very quick car |

Hi All; I've a 2010 D3 2.0ltr (163hp) FWD single Turbo 16k, and have not had any panic situations yet. Plenty of grunt for overtaking if you drive properly and anticipate and get the turbo up to speed. Difference between 2.0 & 2.4 ltr (5 cyl) engines is the stroke, ie different length of 'Con Rods', as the bore diameter is the same. Maybe a slight difference in the cyl head also.

Two weeks ago I bought a 2.4D S AWD Gearshift. If I get my facts right, this is a 163hp motor. The auto and AWD all will serve to lessen performance, but I drove it all the way from Newcastle on the A1/M1/A34 route to Southampton. Not ran it much since, but I was more than satisfied with the performance.
Previous car was an Audi A6 2.0 TDI. A little more brisk, but not much. When you put your foot down the car 'goes'. Buy with confidence unless you are after 'sports' performance.

I have a 2013 D4 2.0 FWD, the power in all gear ranges is fantastic especially considering the size & weight of the car, in the 70-80mph overtaking is great. I looked at the D5 & to be honest I couldn't justify the extra price for something I don't need that extra power for. I I was you I would have a good test drive in the different engines both A road and motorway, the dealer let me & the wife go by ourselves so I could boot it on the motorway. Great, Great, Great.

You say it has one turbo and I would be interested to know where you found this info. I had assumed that it was a derated engine and was it was similar to the 2009 engine? |

It is only the 2.0 litre FWD that is a single turbo? So no need to look at the V5. |

Perhaps I am mistaken.
I was sure I read it when I was looking to get mine. What the flippin' heck is the D3's 2nd turbo doing then.... On the D5, the power keeps building up to the red line, power drops off on D3. Have a look under the bonnet?? |
