If the bolt head has been chewed, then a universal/master key won't usually work. The usual locking bolt removal tool normally won't touch them too.

I had it with mine, took it to loads of places, one of them wanted to weld things to the bolt (didn't appeal to me tbh) and another wanted me to take the other 4 bolts out and drive round in circles till it loosened itself!

The socket and hammer trick is a fast and effective means of being rid of the lockers, especially if you've done a few - I can do all four in less than 10 minutes on a good day.

I agree, but there's a knack to it. Centre punches are sometimes safer as seen folk smash the stud with chisel before now. Knack is firm but notto aggressive. Confident strikes.

I have seen the gear some of these guys have. It's not about having the keys, but some spangly gear. End of day they don't want to miss out on sale of 4 tyres so they very adept if go right place.

If you know you can get to back of stud and knock out easily, it sometimes easier to use tube and snapem off. Studs are only couple quid.

Today I successfully removed three locking nuts but the fourth won't budge - the key just slips off. I put them on and definitely didn't over tighten them but it appears one bolt is slightly damaged.

Has anyone used the Laser Locking wheel nut remover with an XC60 MY11 successfully?. The bolt has the central hexagonal stud and the outer wavy key circle at the base.

Depends on the locking nut really does. If your nut has a ring on the outer side that spins then that wheel nut remover won't do jack other than really **** you off.

if you're a member of the AA they will remove the wheel locking nuts for you using a lock on socket lengthy lever. Works well on damaged wheel nuts.

Thanks Morrismen. I have Volvo Assistance as part of my service plan. I don't think they would come out for a stuck locking nut, unfortunately. The AA did for my son when his locking nut wouldn't budge even though the car was in the drive but he did have a puncture.

I doesn't have a rotating collar. I was told by local garage that the central hexagonal stud would just rotate but it doesn't as far as I can see, at least it doesn't on the ones I removed. The guy didn't seem interested in helping though their main business is tyres and told me it was going to be really difficult and I should go to a Volvo garage.

The security relies on the small depth of wavy impression that the rim of the key fits into, I think. There isn't much contact between the key and the bolt so the slightest defect renders the thing useless.

If there's no rotating collar and there's room for a normal socket the locking nut SHOULD remove it. It'll take a lot of force to turn it though so a breaker bar will help.

No, but they might come out for a "puncture".
Just let your tyre down, give them a call, then act dumb
