D5 (D5244T to 2005) - Dealer recommends oil level at MIN

Hi,

Hope I got the right forum and Prefix... I have a D5 XC90 2004 model.

Car went trough MOT in September 2010. Passed 1st time, but the mechanic warned that oil needed topping up as it was at MIN.

Car went for service at local Volvo dealer in Oct, came back with oil at MIN.

I didn't have time to go back to dealer, but kept an eye on the oil now and then and it is staying at MIN.

Eventually pulled past the dealer last week. Asked for some top up oil and got told the level must stay at MIN!

When I asked for bit more detail only thing they could come up with is that there were problems with too much oil in the engines and this is the current recommendation from Volvo. Apparently Volvo even considered replacing all dipsticks on these cars a while back but decided against it. They now fill only to the MIN level on the dipstick....

Now that sounds a bit fishy to me. I see lots of posts about issues with the newer engines and oil/diesel problems, but nothing about the older D5 engines.

Anyone got a similar story from a dealer?

It has been a while since I worked on cars, but leaving the oil level at MIN just feels wrong. We had the car 2 years, it has just under 40k miles on the clock..... would like to keep it gooing for a long while still!

Yes it is WRONG! it should be on MAX if it is a 163 bhp D5 which a 2004 would be ..

The dealer is getting confused with the later 2006 ones with particle filter where the oil should be 2/3 up the marked section between min and max ...

so point out their 2 mistakes ,
one... not being able to recognise which engine you have and
two , if it was the right engine getting the advised level wrong!

If it's left at min long enough that's what'll happen

Wonder how much oil he charges for?

I'll try to go past the dealer this weekend again and press them for a bit more detail on this.

Yes, good point 961 - I'll also dig up the invoice and check how much oil they charged for :-)

Anyone know what the capacity of that engine is (assuming the oil filter got changed too)? I'm sure I can find it in the manual, but maybe someone can save me that effort....

6.5 Litres of oil and definately on the 163 should be above the min level!!

Quick update.

I got in touch with Volvo UK, they will check things out and get back to me tomorrow.

Right now it makes no sense to me - would a dealer really risk their reputation (and future business) to save a bit of oil?!

Volvo UK and then the dealer got back to me very promptly. Which is a plus.

Dealer apologised for the wrong information given about the required oil level. Fair enough.

I was offered to have the oil topped up free of charge. Would have expected this.

No satisfactory explanation for the oil being low after a service. I guess there just isn't any......

There is no point taking this any further. I'll be looking for another place to service my car next time.....
