Coded mate, and I think it's a 'dealer only' job!

I'd be wary of buying a car without keys. That's an old trick

sorry if this is hijacking your thread , but ive just bought a 2001 v40 and it only came with one key and remote i have emailed a couple of dealers to price a spare and so far this is the cheapest reply ive had :
These are the prices you requested. Both the new key and remote have to coded to the vehicle before they will work. This has to be done in our workshop with the vehicle connected to the Volvo computer system so that software can be downloaded to it. Replacement Key £60.50 plus VAT. Software For Above £10.76 plus VAT. Replacement Remote £62.00 plus VAT. Software For Above £9.59 plus VAT. Labour For Dowloading Software £44.00 plus VAT. Total amount including VAT £214.87. Let me know if you want to proceed, the keys normally take around three working days to arrive. We would ask for payment in advance for the parts as they are unique to your vehicle. this still seems hideously expensive to me , can anyone suggest anywhere cheaper? |

Personally,I would walk away from this one-there are plenty more good examples out there-the 'lost key' could be a scam-caveat emptor.

very true , would you sell a car with no keys? Or get at least one key so it can be tried by any purchaser .. sounds dodgy . Its the sellers responsibility to make sure it's got a key before selling unless he gives it way ..

For the key, some locksmiths can clone them depending on make and model so it's work phoning round before subsmitting yourself to the main stealer. The remote is more of an issue. In some cases they can be programmed in yourself (late 90s Fords are like this) so a second hand remote is a possibility. This worked a treat on my old Mundano. As for a car with no keys, pull the other one it's got bells on. |
