Default Blue smoke, but only when starting on a cold day

2002 S80 diesel 5244 engine 70,000 miles......
On starting in colder weather the car blows out blue smoke for about 10 seconds and runs lumpy (the colder the day the lumpier it is). It then it settles down and runs fine, even better when engine teperature is reached.
On warmer days (20+celsius), it starts fine.

In trying to locate the problem - all 5 glow plugs now work fine when tested off the car. Put injector cleaner into fuel - running has improved a bit though the start up problem remains.

BTW I also noticed that when waiting for the glow plug indicator on the dash to extinguish, it flashes off twice in quick succession OFF/ON/OFF, rather than the once you would expect. A mechanic told me that the glow plugs are supplied with power in a bank of 3 and a bank of 2 - is that anything to do with the problem?

I also read in these forums that the glow plug relay could be at fault and to replace it is the only way to test that idea.

Don't want to have to fork out for new injectors, but may have to if all other ways don't solve it.

just put a test light on one of the the glow plugs and see if you get a feed when this problem happens ..
