Hi, I am lucky to have an excellent red block, at 3000rpm it sits at 80mph, which leaves another 3000 to the red line at 6000, I was wondering has anyone ever red lined one and what top speed did they achieve?
Cheers

Well, the theory says double your 80mph, so 160.

However, it takes a whole lot of extra horses to overcome the massive drag at those sorts of speeds, plus it would probably become quite unstable!

volvos are usual well over geared so no you wont be able to do 160 mph without tripling the horsepower :-)

Anybody who's got it past 150 would probably have a higher rev limit than 6250 which is the stock one. Mine's chipped so can go to 6500. I've had it up to 110 and it had a lot more to give with a 15g turbo and V cam unchipped. Stock I would think 120-130. As soon as it's not stock then I think the Volvette got to 180-190?

My 760T, my B234F and my Sport (when running right) will all go to about 125/130 - speedo. The speedo in the Sport is accurate.

Surely aerodynamic resistance is a square law phenomenon, so to double the speed you'd need 4 times the power.

Conversely if you had double the power you'd go to existing top speed * 1.414 (the square root of 2) so if we say that about 160 bhp gets you to 130, 320 bhp ought to get you to about 180.

Had just short of 130 indicated out of my old 740GLE (I suspect it was a little bit less than this. 118-120 maybe?)

No idea about the 940. Not even had a ton out of it.

I cant see a 300 bhp s60 R doing 180 somehow .. ( if it wasnt restricted to 155 mph ) these days 250 - 300 bhp is getting quite common for "sporty" cars there is even a 272 bhp 1.6 petrol peugeot now .
Another point , the new astra is around 2000kg i read in a newspaper on the weekend , true or not i don't know but that would need 300 bhp to be sporty !

One of the reasons they face lifted the 740/760 was that they got a bit light at the front end when going fast.
